Joe Ryan of Bloomberg recently posted a story on Auto News explaining the following:  “Many U.S. cities are considering the purchase of $10B worth of electric cars & trucks to show cynical automakers there is a demand for lower-emission cars, just as President Trump seeks to look over the pollution levels the industry opposes.  Some cities including NY and Chicago together asked automakers for the prices and feasibility of providing over 100,000 electric vehicles, including police vehicles, street sweepers and trash removal trucks, said LA Mayor Garcetti, who is leading the effort. That would be comparable to about 72% of total national plug-in sales last year. While city leaders seek more lower-emission cars to lessen the role city traffic plays in impacting the climate, automakers say there aren’t truly that many buyers. The Trump team does seek to remove regulations which are stifling industry

The initiative is still in the beginning stage; however, cities may try to proceed further. Many cities are asking about cars that don’t exist yet, such as electric fire department vehicles and commercial trucks.  This is predominately a Democrat-based movement. Auto manufacturers have been aggressively attempting to meet emission reduction deadlines. For whatever reason, citizens still like gas-powered vehicles. Los Angeles began the efforts for a shared electric-vehicle ordering to reduce pricing and increase demand during the Paris climate change environmental conference back in late 2015.” The full article is available here.

The March 2, 2017 edition of the Maui News informed us of an auto scrap recycling program: “Those residing in Maui County may now dispose of (1) vehicle each year for free via a new county abandoned auto program. An Abandoned Vehicles – Junk Vehicle Disposal Assistance Program (JVDAP), has been established, allowing for the free scrap of a car annually until funding is consumed, according to the local Department of Environmental Management.  Local inhabitants of the area are required to register these old vehicles as “permanently junked” and then bring them to Hammerhead Metals, the participating metals recycling facility.

Users will be asked to complete a brief survey to monitor the progress of the program. Owners are required to bring proper documents to participate. Eligibility includes passenger vehicles, pick-up trucks and vans weighing up to 3 tons. They further asked that the cars are cleaned of excessive household trash or other waste. They cannot accept camper shells when they are junked. Vehicles may be brought in with fluids and are accepted regardless of condition. For full eligibility requirements and documents, go to www.mauicounty.gov

The JVDAP is funded through a Highway Beautification & Abandoned Vehicles Fund, generated from annual vehicle registration fees.  It assists those residents in disposing of their junk vehicles safely and legally while eliminating the volume of abandoned vehicles littering the roads. “Plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) owners are altering the ways they fuel their cars. Rather than a 15-minute visit to a gas station, most PEV owners recharge while at home and plugged-in during the night. To charge them at home overnight, drivers can choose a Level One or Level Two charger option. The decision is based on preference, needs and costs or install. Level Two chargers refuel PEVs much faster than Level One, but require higher installation costs. In some instances, Level One charging doesn’t have installation costs. Level One charging requires a 110/120-volt outlet, the 3-prong plug-type available in some parking areas. It requires 15 amps of steady load to charge roughly 5 miles per hour. 78% of PEV drivers average 15-45 miles of daily driving, which requires 3 to 8 hours of Level One charging.

Level 2 charging requires a 208/240-volt outlet & charges PEVs must faster: 3.3 kW (30 amps) to 19.2 kW (100 amps). Most vehicles currently on the market are only capable of using 30 amps for 3.3 or 6.6 kW charging with a charge rate varying at 8-24mph. Level Two charging is preferred for early buyers of PEVs. The important consideration when selecting charge levels in an MUD environment is the electrical load requirements. The Level One load is smaller, close to a microwave. Level 2 charging will generate a significant new load for the property. In both cases, an owner or renter should hire an electrician to estimate the capacity of the property and to determine if it could be supported.  Single-family homeowners, unlike MUDS, usually have sufficient capacity to support overnight charging and the install of the charging equipment (electric vehicle equipment or EVSE) is a simpler cost and process. The costs of installing EVSE in a MUD parking area may vary greatly and possibly be cost prohibitive. Costs occur at 2 stages of installation:

  • Investing in sufficient electrical capacity to support the additional load of PEV charging: Electrical upgrades, at either within the panel or utility service level, can add installation costs depending on the configuration of the property & the utility that services it.
  • Connecting the EVSE to the property’s electrical system: To obtain electricity to the EVSE, wiring is run through via an electrical panel to the PEV parking spot. Costs maybe significant as the distance between the 2 increases.”  The full article is available here.

Electric Car Report States Intentions

When contacting our wrecked car buyer in the greater Urbancrest, Minerva Park, and Georgesville areas, have your vehicle title. Who buys old cars for salvage in the regions of Brown, Norwich, and Perry, OH?  Who buys scrap cars to be towed away for cash in the areas of Plain, Sharon, or Darbydale, OH? Those in Lincoln Village, Amlin, and Clinton should be well aware of where to scrap a car quickly.

Here is an excerpt from the UCLA study on Alternative & Renewable Fuel & Vehicle Program:  “This study is intended for a broad audience of decision makers & those seeking to move PEV adoption in MUDs and particularly, those in the South Bay region. Many auto owners may find the study useful and this would include regional, municipal entities; state agencies; utility reps; MUD unit owners; members of homeowner groups; as well as PEV & possible PEV drivers. Regional and municipal planners should utilize this report to enable PEV adoption where latent desire in present and simplistic install is needed. By covering the area’s MUD portfolio, this report allows planners to think and conduct targeted outreach & course of action for MUD sites for strategic interventions.

State-based organizations should use this study to comprehend the MUD related barriers to adopting PEV and consider various tools, such as rebates, that lower costs associated with installing EVSE at MUD sites.  Utility reps may find the report beneficial in the identification for where PEV demand and relative electrical growth be most rapid on the area. So Cal Edison (SCE), the major electric utility in the area, just received approval for the 1st Phase of a Charge Ready rollout to install charging infrastructure at extended dwell-time sites, such MUDs, where PEV drivers are parked for at least 4 hours. SCE may use this study to help identify specific parcels to reach out and other PEV programs.  Property administrators and those in homeowner associations (HOAs) should utilize this report to appreciate the elements of a building’s electrical network and to better analyze the costs of installing PEV at-home charging variables. Current PEV owners and those considering ownership of them should use this study to fully understand the potential costs of installation of PEV charging units at home.” The study in full format is available here.

Scrap & Recycling Jargon

Today is as good a day as any in Groveport, Canal Winchester, and Huber Ridge to get cash for a car with free towing. Why not take action in Hamilton, Reynoldsburg, and Montgomery—learn how to scrap my car by calling (614) 382-4060. Do you know how to sell a junk car in Mifflin, New Rome, and Lake Darby? If not give us a call today. Make it a New Year’s resolution in Whitehall, Worthington, and Lockbourne to convert unwanted vehicles to junk car scrap. Did you know that in the US, 12M to 15M cars are scrapped, providing tremendous amounts of salvageable components

In the Dec 2, 2016 edition of Waste Dive, Cole Rosengren delivered the following news: “A new online study from the Foodservice Packaging Inst., piloted by Resource Recycling Systems, found that citizens do not respond well to industry language or jargon when it comes to comprehending recycling guidelines, as stated by Plastics News. When presented a picture of a plastic clamshell container, merely 19% of those identified it as such. The term “plastic container” was selected by 61% & 12% picked “to-go container.” The results were comparable when shown a polystyrene clamshell — 50% of those responding selected “foam container” as the top description. When asked what source they usually rely on most for recycling data 31% said their city, county or recycling company’s website, followed by 23% who said signs on reprocessing carts. Among those in the 18-34 range, social media was also a positive choice. As for where they go initially to grasp whether a product is recyclable, 51% of those said they look at its recycling symbol.

Strong education is a vital part of increasing diversion rates & limiting contamination that can be expensive for material recovery facilities. The study also looked at the top language for directing citizens to empty & clean such containers in efforts to better know this issue. The results support advancements in standardized terminology on a broad level that has been motivated by a few groups in particular. Recycle By City has been striving to provide clear online material about the recycling procedures for specific municipalities. Recycle Across America has been working diligently to standardized labels for containers in various public buildings, particularly schools. Rhode Island was the 1st to adopt the labels and make them easily accessible to all governmental outfits and municipalities.

As found in the survey results, customers also still relied on the basic product recycling symbols which is likely a reason why more brands are starting to use the standardized How2Recycle style packaging. A new How2Compost label was just launched also to address the increasing amount of compostable materials coming on the market. All of these strategies are promising, though it is likely that packaging still is outside any actual recycling segment which has encouraged discussions of extended production programs or circular economy implementations to address this. “Though the formation and modeling clay is a pastime of many kids, who can craft and recycle the stuff for years, The Ford Motor Co. is taking after the practice as the company marks to recycle about 2,250kg of clay annually. Employing a new idea to model future cars: craft, re-craft and then go to recycling. Ford says nothing is better than constructing a full-size clay model of a vehicle. The digital technology is currently available and the clay figures remain an critical part of the creative design process, helping designers notice issues in both the inside and exterior of a car.

The organization uses over 80 tons of clay annually to construct these vehicle models. None of this material would be reused otherwise but during the last (5) years the company has used an exclusive machine to recycle more than 9,000kg of clay and avoid landfills. They are constantly being influenced by new technology; however, they want to view physical distinctions earlier in the process, and turn it to clay. Model Manager at Ford’s Studio in Dearborn, MI, Lloyd VandenBrink says. Ford wants most of the clay the firm recycles to come out of a milling process, during which designers use a device to help mold the silhouette of a car. Once collected, these clay chips are positioned in the recycling unit – designed to transfer Ford’s special clay materials. The machine pushes and churns the clay with several blades, removing any air from the material. The clay is then strewn through a nozzle which is under heat to achieve the proper consistency so that it then is able to be recycled.” The complete story is available at http://guardian.ng/features/ford-sees-future-in-recycling-car-modelling-clay/

Ohio Struggling with Recycling

Those looking for a spot to sell a junk car for fast cash in Lake Darby, Whitehall, or Worthington, should call us. Where is a good place to sell an old car in the regions of Lockbourne, Marble Cliff, and Harrisburg, OH? Believe it or not, even a totaled car has some kind of salvageable value in Riverlea, Urbancrest, and Minerva Park, OH. When deciding where to scrap a car in Franklin County, be sure to check that the recycler is an advocate for the environment.

An October 2016 article in The Courier by Denise Grant states: “Lorain County’s recycling program, which includes the recycling of glass bottles, is common for Ohio, according to the state EPA. The focus is the public’s resolve to recycle in the first place, according to Keith Bailey, the existing director of the Lorain County Solid Waste District, a veteran of over thirty years in the industry. There are places for both private and public sectors in environmental recycling. In Hancock County, the recycling program’s first, Litter Landing, is running at a $300K annual loss. It has an archaic baler for cardboard and plastics; works with an aging glass crusher; and annually ships roughly 200 tons of various glass products over to Pennsylvania. Mixed glass rides along for free because it has zero value.

Litter Landing isn’t accepting glass anymore and Hancock County’s recycling program is on life-support. With residents totaling 300,000, nearly (4) times that of Hancock County, Lorain County (LC) handled 5,234 tons of glass in 2014.  LC’s solid waste coordination plan is more than just gathering junk in a bin for shipping elsewhere. A good plan is said to be the best starting point for making adjustments. There is a theory that we’re making money selling recyclables. Many of the recycleable material needs be subsidized. Most of LC’s recycling is done with mobile roll-off bins, with materials processed by private companies. The county facilitates all hazardous waste, as the private sector has been reluctant to do so. LC officials have been occupied with the EPA to find a major glass processor, like Rumpke Consolidated Companies, which is a bit closer (in Dayton). Fees which are collected by the Hancock County Landfill are purposed to balance out recycling losses.  Glass is just difficult to handle and costs labor. A tractor-trailer load of clean brown or clear glass has value of only $200.

EPA officials Marie Barnett, Ernie Stall & Chet Chaney talked about resuming glass recycling, but growing it to include bottles from businesses. Rumpke is one of the US’ bigger privately-held waste recyclers. They are capable of handling 80,000 tons of glass annually. They could offer a market for Hancock County’s glass & limit handling concerns.   In 2014, Litter Landing had operating expenses totaling $436,930.   In 2015, the deficit nearly doubled.” The complete article can be viewed at http://thecourier.com/local-news/2016/10/01/state-epa-to-evaluate-county-recycling-program/

Where to sell your junk car in Groveport, Canal Winchester, or Huber Ridge is the question–we’ve got the right answers.

An October 10, 2016 article on Recycling Today brought up an interesting story: “The U.S. EPA has proclaimed an contract with High Plains Motors Inc. (HPM) agreeing to alleged hazardous waste violations from to the improperly managing used oil, paint solvents, lacquer thinner, and other such materials at an auto dealership and service in Wolf Point, Montana. As part of the settlement, High Plains will pay penalties of $5,758 and finish a junk vehicle recycling initiative on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. Suzanne Bohan, an EPA regional administrator says that the EPA commends High Plains Motors &Tribal leadership for their decision to work together to safely remove many abandoned cars from the reservation.

Deb Madison, Environmental Manager for the Fort Peck Tribes feels that they look forward to working closely with HPM and the Fort Peck Housing Authority to resolve these environmental problems. The HPM automobile dealership & service center is located on private land just inside the boundaries of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. EPA regulators in 2015 found that the company had violated some aspects of the Resource Conservation & Recovery Act (RCRA) by not labeling used oil reservoirs and not responding to dumping of used oil at the facility. EPA staff also found that the organization erred in properly managing paint solvent wastes, oil/water/antifreeze mixtures, and lacquer at their site. The EPA issued HPM a compliance demand in 2015, and the establishment has now employed measures to get into compliance with hazardous waste laws.

The proclamation resolves HPMs liabilities for the supposed RCRA violations by finalizing a penalty as well as a supplemental environmental program that will recycle aboout 86 abandoned car on the reservation. After seeking feedback from the Fort Peck Assiniboine & Sioux Tribes and EPA, HPM agreed to work with a local scrap company, Trader’s Den, to retrieve abandoned or junk vehicles on Tribal housing-owned land in the Wolf Point and Poplar areas of the reservation. This process will remove possible sources of pollution from the car such as oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, gasoline, & batteries. HPM will properly remove or salvage all recoverable material and will place vehicles at a local scrap site for crushing & recycling.

EPA has also been operational with the Fort Peck Tribes and the local communities of Poplar & Wolf Pt through the agency’s Making a Visible Difference in Communities initiative. A focus of this program is achieving environmental outcomes and reducing them through technical support and grant funding. Recent EPA Brownfields funding is offered in partnership with the Great Northern Development Corp. and Tribes’ Brownfields initiative, is removing contaminants & determining revitalization openings at many old buildings in the area. The removal of these scrap vehicles through this additional project will better the goal of making these communities cleaner & safer places to reside. The full story is available here.

Water in Green Business

The basis of our business in New Albany, Galloway, and Hamilton, is the auto recycling of junk cars. Were you aware that we currently buy scrap cars and pick them up throughout Reynoldsburg, Montgomery, and Mifflin, Ohio. Those seeking a “cars for cash” deal to get rid of an old car in New Rome, Lake Darby, and Whitehall are encouraged to call. We get you the money for a junk car that you desire in an efficient manner throughout Worthington, Lockbourne, and Marble Cliff, OH. The most common regret among those scrapping cars is that they just bought new tires, unfortunately doesn’t add anything to the value of a junk car.

The following except is from Joel Makower in The State of Green Business, 2016: “Water scarcity — due to extended periods of drought, climate changes and over-usage of the scarce resources — emerged as a large news story recently. Further impacting the effects on our health and ecosystems, water shortages hinder many business activities. Companies have ordered water savings within their internal activities, as well as for their suppliers. The new trend between 2010 and 2014 has been organizations using less water. Those using less water (down 1% for U.S. firms) and a bit higher water use globally (up 4%). They are also using less water per unit of earnings. Increased usage in 2012 and 2013 demonstrated the need to employ more efficient operations. For U.S. companies, the most noteworthy savings have been in acquired water from municipalities (down 13% for the 5-year period) and cooling water (down 10 %). Globally, firms procured less water from cities by 5% and cooling water by 4%. However, direct extraction of groundwater or surface water has increased among U.S. firms (up 1%) and significantly among global companies (up 32%). Similarly, supply-chain water usage spiked for the U.S. (up 5%) and global firms (up 6%).

Comparative improvements in water use concentration are more promising. Use has decreased for almost all types of water use. The biggest decreases have been for bought water from municipalities (down 25 % among both U.S. and global firms), cooling water (down 23 percent in the U.S. and 17 percent globally), direct withdrawal of groundwater or surface water (down 12 percent among U.S. companies) and supply-line water use (down 11% in the U.S.). The only enlarged water use intensity stemmed from directly withdrawing ground or surface water for global companies (up 14%). Corporate programs to limit water use will continue to be critical for viable environmental sustainability, particularly as water scarcity impacts more regions and climate changes alter the normal water cycle. As a positive indicator, water usage and intensity are overall decreasing. However, absolute water usage still is higher and is therefore a problem to business as usual. This seems to indicate that companies haven’t fully determined how to keep the bottom line without heightening water usage. There isn’t a need to alter this trend and thus further continuous developments in water efficiency.” The full story can be located here: https://www.greenbiz.com/article/state-green-business-2016

The auto recycling of junk cars

During 2016 in Harrisburg, Riverlea, and Urbancrest, the majority of us who buy scrap cars have been negatively impacted from a steady drop in scrap pricing. Our “cars for cash” system is fast and simple, allowing you to get cash today in Minerva Park, Georgesville, and Brown, OH. Are you wondering where to receive money for a junk car in Norwich, Perry, or Plain, OH? Stop and pick up the phone for a quick assessment on the value of a junk car in Sharon, Lincoln Village, and Amlin, OH. Environmental contamination stemming for junk cars can occur within the scope of scrap car operations. Recycling reduces the pollution common within manufacturing processes.

Vehicle Scrap Recycling Process

Columbus Cash 4 Cars processes auto junk for recycling in the greater Franklin County areas including Riverlea, Urbancrest, and Minerva Park, OH. Those who purchase or buy used cars for scrap in the regions of Georgesville, Brown, and Norwich can attest to market volatility. Paying fast cash for scrap vehicles is our primary function, allowing for the initiation of the recycling process in Perry, Plain, and Sharon, OH. The junk car removal aspect of the business is particularly important in terms of efficiency, even in the areas of Lincoln Village and Amlin. The current price for scrap cars in Columbus is at a significant low currently.

Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling report tells us the following: “Secondary aluminum processing sites convert gathered aluminum-filled scrap into a fully recycled, reusable product. These products are in a variety of forms. The incoming product to these sites is typically pre-treated via a cleaning process involving heat or chemicals to limit contamination due to contaminants like carbon from polymers, paints, and lacquers etc.

This study makes reference to light gauge & heavy gauge recovery processes. These segments are made as a reference to the size and overall area of the scrap class that is being charged into the furnaces. Light gauge scrap (i.e. auto-shred Twitch) will be of lesser size and has a high surface area to volume ratio. Heavy gauge scrap (i.e. Al alloy wheels, Al bumpers) is bigger in size and has a lower surface area to volume ratio versus light gauge scrap. Dross is formed naturally during aluminum smelting; reactions with oxygen form aluminum oxide at a higher rate during the melting process due to the increased processing temperature. During liquefaction of aluminum product, the aluminum oxide films on the product of the individual particulates come to the surface of the molten volume. This by-product is filtered and sent to a dross processor for further recovery. White dross is a type that forms when no salt flux is used during the melting. Salt cake is a by-product of white dross processes and consists of close composition to that of black dross. A similar composition results because a salt fluxing agent that is utilized during white dross processing to extract aluminum-based units. Salt cake & black dross consist of different compositional proportions of aluminum, aluminum oxide & salt flux.

A spike in production increases the aluminum metal unit loss, thus decreasing the recycling rate of auto aluminum. Many reasons attribute to this limit including purity of the melt and, as discussed, surface area to volume ratio. Mixes of aluminum scrap products, possibly mixed with primary aluminum, are commonly charged together to generate the required secondary aluminum alloy. Secondary aluminum recovery processors understand and quantify the metal yield expected from each charge and identify how each mix amid constituent affects this yield. Due to the variable nature of these charge mixtures, distinguishing them into two categories, heavy and light recovery processes, although not handled separately in most cases, permits an appropriate melt yield to be credited to the scrap class that is being recovered to form a new aluminum material.” To view the complete study click here.

A study co-authored by the Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling, Metal Processing Institute, and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute reported some interesting data: “The total recycling rate for auto aluminum is 91%. These surveys covered 5% of the US’ dismantling industry considering the amount of end-of-life (ELVs) vehicles entering the survey responder’s lots, 32% of the downstream separation industry based on volumetric throughput and 60-70% of the secondary aluminum processing sector based on market share statements. The measured average material collection percentage for ELVs that go through a dismantling outfit and a downstream separation system is 99.7%. The major hindrance for the auto aluminum recycling percentage stems from the recovery processes. The product when in the form of aluminum oxide is brought to a landfill from these processes. When a heavier gauge scrap category is charged, referred to for our purposes as a heavy recovery process, the metal yield of 95% is typical. Light gauge scrap melting is believed to generate in a metal yield of 91%, and the method is termed as a light recovery process in the report. Most of auto aluminum is light gauge, mixed, or shredded scrap. It’s been stated that 86% of obsolete auto-aluminum is charged in this form.

Analyzing the sensitivity to determine a minimum & maximum auto aluminum recycling percentage (RR%) for the US. This RR% range is 80% – 98%. The measured average of 91% falls between there and is believed to be much more indicative of the overall industry versus these extremes. This report provides a basis of the variability of the secondary aluminum production sector specifically relative to auto aluminum gathering and recovery.

The demand for aluminum in the North American auto sector is supposed to grow through 2025. Ducker Worldwide reports a 39% spike of aluminum weight per North American light vehicle over the next 10 years. The big driver for the rise is the added content in body sheet & closures with continued content expansion in casting & extruded auto-components. The rise in aluminum is somewhat driven by the advantage of vehicle light-weighting to attain the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards. Aluminum, being a lighter-weight product compared to conventional materials, delivers similar strength. Lighter materials allow for overall lighter delivered vehicles with similar safety performance while boosting fuel economy. The amplified use of aluminum in auto also helps advance car fuel efficiency while reducing overall energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions from a vehicle lifecycle point of view, as indicated in several life cycle studies.” The full story is available here: http://drivealuminum.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Final-Report-Automotive-Aluminum-Recycling-at-End-of-Life-A-Grave-to-Gate-Analysis.pdf

Many scrap auto recyclers use systems and processes that are friendly to the atmosphere. Did you know that the majority of the materials that comprise your car can be reclaimed, repurposed or remanufactured?

We are back with another installment discussing the recycling solution for using shredded car tires for construction projects, which is based on a Calrecycle 2016 TDA report: “All contractors and subcontractors should understand the basics of working with TDA prior to beginning. Information on prior completed projects and how TDA was used can help the management staff plan and complete the install without complications or delays. Based on management’s experience, once they’ve worked with TDA, they are typically comfortable doing so. The advantages of it include the following: The materials can be moved with conventional construction equipment.  It’s produced from waste tires and (supposedly) cleaned with fewer fines than rock or gravel.  The quality of the production is monitored, and no density test is needed to validate. It is lighter-weight and free-draining, and it has non-degrading type characteristics. Since TDA is derived from waste tires, it can rouse public attention sometimes, thus an on-site representative should be designated to act as the project public relations (PR) person if needed. This person should be appropriately selected so that media interruptions do not slow the progress of the job.

TDA is considerably lighter than conventional fill material. The limiting factor for moving TDA is not its weight but its volume. To provide the most low-cost method of trucking, trailers need to be big enough so the weight of the TDA being moved reaches the legal highway limit (80,000 lbs gross). The ability to hold and stockpile quantities of TDA on-site before use will allow for the best time and materials management. When considering a TDA stockpile site, the local fire department’s approval should be sought. It is recommended that only vehicles with tires filled with self-sealing gels be used in working with TDA, since it may contain metal shredding.” The full article is available here.

A CA Department of Resources Recycling & Recovery’s recent report tells us the following: “The earliest known use of scrap tires in engineering-related applications occurred in the 1970s, when waste tires were used for building breakwaters and reefs. Use of junk tires in these applications was very limited through the 1980s. Since the late-eighties, CalRecycle has begun a variety of initiatives to greatly increase the volume of waste tires that are put to a use instead than being sent to a landfill. A few programs have focused on research & market development for recycling scrap tires into TDA for varying applications. Illegal dumping, environmentally and financially horrific tire pile fires led CA to accelerate its movement toward beneficial uses of TDA.

The first transportation-related project using TDA in CA was an embankment project built in 2000 near Milpitas, CA at the Dixon Landing. The properties of TDA make for significant savings on this project. Utilizing TDA in civil engineering projects has become a big part of CalRecycle’s effort to divert these tires from landfills. As additional projects are completed, such use of TDA is quickly becoming attractive as an option for both. One of TDA’s biggest benefits is that it is lightweight. It also has great thermal insulation properties.” The complete story is available here.

A recent article by Lisa Bernard-Kuhn on wcpo.com titled ‘Could toxic chemicals along the Ohio River be a danger to our drinking water?’ with the following information: “At a dormant Duke Energy power plant, at least 10 billion lbs. of coal ash containing toxins plus more are sitting on the banks of the OH River – a resource of drinking water for more than 5M people. How the polluted ponds got there began well before environmental laws were created to keep people & drinking water safe from potentially hazardous waste. How much longer these might stay — and put the drinking water at risk — is a drama just beginning.

Clermont County Commissioner David Uible says that thinking about what happened in Flint, MI is just how important water is to public health and safety; to think that we have a water supply adjacent to ash pits is unbelievable. The worst-case scenario is that you get a flood on the Ohio River that breaches the dams and all the ash is washed into the river. As early as next year, Duke has said it will begin deconstructing the old plant. The utility giant closed the plant in 2014 just as the U.S. EPA was instituting new standards for how coal ash ponds are managed.

Federal rules in 2015 set new standards for coal ash pond guidelines. OH is one of the largest coal ash generators in the US, and has some of the worst state regulations. The company has been conducting scientific & engineering studies at the site to figure out the best method to safely close these basins. They point to incidents in Pennsylvania, Tennessee and North Carolina where lack of maintenance and attention at aging power plants leading to large spills of coal ash into local rivers and streams from ponds like in Beckjord.” The article is available in its entirety at this link.

Jerold Chinn posted an article titled ‘Residents reminded of risks of disposing used motor oil’ on sfbay.ca on July 8, 2016 with the following story: “San Francisco officials are retelling residents that discarding used motor oil isn’t safe for the local water system or our environment. It is illegal to dump used oil on the city streets or in the drains. At a press conference Katy Tang, a Supervisor with the Department of the Environment, said that people should recycle used motor oil at businesses such as Pennzoil 10-Min Oil Change. Those who bring in their used motor oil can receive forty cents for each gallon they bring in. These collection sites can accept up (5) gallons per visit. Residents only need to give provide their name when dropping off the oil.

Tang said in a statement that she recalls helping her dad change the oil to their vehicle when she was younger. The department is aggressively promoting a campaign targeting various communities to recycle used oil by placing signs in different languages including Chinese language billboards, municipal bus ads & web ads. Director of the Department of Environment Debbie Raphael, says that it is important to keep the SF Bay area clean of motor oil and to advise residents on how dispose the oil. The neighborhood based collection centers like Pennzoil make it simple and easy for residents to bring in their oil and leave feeling like they’ve done their part to protect the local environment. The city has twenty-three participating auto-related businesses that will take used motor oil, the department said in including (4) in the Sunset District. The department reports that these collection sites collected 27K gallons of oil. About 30% of the oil collected came from specifically the Sunset District. Anyone who attended the press conference was given a complimentary oil pan.” The full article is available at: https://sfbay.ca/2016/07/08/residents-reminded-of-risks-of-disposing-used-motor-oil/

In reviewing this article, a few thoughts come to mind. Virtually all adults (that have a brain) know that used oil should not be dumped on to the ground or in our drains. Some people may think it is OK to dispose of the used oil in with their trash—which is not true. The true issue is that those choosing to improperly dispose of hazardous oil are likely just lazy or the simply do not care. Those who are found violating these basic environmental laws need to be harshly made aware that we DO care about the issue. For someone who intentionally dumps used motor oil on to the ground or into drains, the punishment for a 1st offense should be something like a combination of an $800 fine and 24 hours of community service.

On July 5, 2016 an article titled ‘US Auto Fuel Economy Rating Slips in June’ composed by Paul Ausick explained the following: “The average fuel-economy rating for newer cars sold in the US for June 2016 was 25.3 MPG, down 0.1 mpg compared with the month of May . For all  2015, the overall average fuel-economy rating for new vehicles sold was 25.3 mpg.

While the window paper average is 5.2 mpg higher than when the information were first gathered, the average is still 0.5 mpg below its all-time high of 25.8 mpg set in August 2014. When gas prices started falling in the US, consumers purchased more light trucks, SUVs and crossovers, which get lower mpg ratings and contribute to the low average. The information are based on the average sales-weighted fuel-efficiency rating printed on a newer car’s window sticker and is compiled by Michael Sivak & Brandon Schoettle of the University of Michigan’s Transportation  Institute.

The sales-weighted unadjusted Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) efficiency rating averaged 31.7 MPG in May, up 0.4 mpg month over month and an improvement of 7.0 mpg since October 2007. These numeric values aren’t clearly comparable to the  ratings because these are adjusted by the EPA & used to gauge the window-sticker ratings. Overall vehicle sales in the month of June rose 2.5% 1.51M units. For the year to date, sales are up 1.5% versus  2015. On a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) scale, the sum fell from 17.46M units in May to 16.68M units in June. In June 2015 the SAAR came in at 17.01 million units.” The full article is available at this link:  http://247wallst.com/autos/2016/07/05/us-auto-fuel-economy-rating-slips-in-june/

In the July 1, 2016 edition of Recycling Today and article titled ‘Houston to require licenses to handle scrap tires’ told us the following: “The City of Houston, TX has begun enforcing its Scrap Tire Ordinance following a 6-month preliminary grace period. Under the newly added ordinance, approved by City Council late last year, all junk tire operations in the city limits are now required to properly register with the city. Additionally, it establishes rules, regulations & procedures for the transportation, storing, recordkeeping and environmental disposal of scrap tires. It is estimated that over 19K tires have been removed in this manner since February as the city works to stop illegal dumping at sites in the city that can serve as healthy breeding grounds for the mosquito-born virus known as Zika. Mayor Sylvester Turner says that this is a huge problem in the neighborhoods, and we have to counter it from all angles.

All the businesses that are presently involved in the used/scrap tire market will be required to register and/or obtain a license annually with the city. Tire transportation companies must display a city-issued sticker on their trucks. Tire generators must allow inspections of their records each year. Beginning in July, inspectors will be visiting businesses to check for tire compliance. The cost to register is about $93 for a business that generates scrap tires and $172 for entities that handle the transport of them. Owners who refuse to register will receive tickets. Fines are $250/day, per offense. The illegal dumping of scrap tires is a serious health & safety concern in the City of Houston, because these tires provide breeding places for mosquitoes and other insects that can carry diseases, and have potentially adverse effects on the health of citizens.” The full article is available here: http://www.recyclingtoday.com/article/houston-tire-ordinance/

The eco-friendly means of handling recycling helps in conserving many raw materials and protects various habitats.

On June 22, 2016 an article was posted on Environmental Leader by Ken Silverstein titled ‘Recycling and Reusing is Good for the Environment and the Company’ with the following details: “When it comes to formalizing your company’s brand and image on reducing and recycling you nearly apply it to every material in the shop. That’s a key point that the ISS’ head of sustainability Dan Gilbert made at Environmental Leader’s recent conference in a session about sustainability. The ultimate goal, he said, is to create “zero waste,” which can mean cutting anywhere from 90% to 100% of what your company is puts in landfills. The final 10%, he emphasized, is where the real work is. To get there, businesses should be measuring and managing their waste streams, and reporting their progress at least on a quarterly basis.

If you save money, your corporate leaders are more than likely to get behind the initiative. While those sustainability efforts require an upfront outlay in time and resources, they build affinity in communities and among customers. Some examples: Computers would be the worst thing to toss in the landfill. This is since they have so many metals and that can leach into the ground water system. Other things that businesses can recycle include supplies, equipment, boxes, shelving and miscellaneous racks.

The companies that take those items might pay those donating for the materials that will eventually go into new products. If a mobile phone is built from recycled components, it prevented waste from going into the landfill and it has created a perfectly good use of still viable components. Companies with their own cafeterias, furthermore, can compost their food scrap rather than toss it in the trash. Food scraps are heavy and they break down and create methane gases. It is possible to be composted and that enriches the soil. Things like plastic pieces, tableware and coffee cups can also be eco-friendly — meaning they are biodegradable.

All businesses can take steps to be more environmentally friendly. One of the fastest ways to do so is to create separate containers for the recyclables and the real trash — but not to mix together. A single-stream deposit in which everything goes into a single bin is better than having various ones for different items. As for the companies that have to invest in these bins, it can be hard enough to get them to buy one, much less 4 of them. A local place to put all recyclables is usually the best solution. Having difficulty finding a vendor to pick them up? Start with the hauler that picks your trash. And if that doesn’t work, get on Google and look for one. He points to a recent Utah State University report that found 20-40% percent of the objects that go into the trash could have been recycled.” The complete article is available here.

An article titled ‘Tire recycling event to reduce mosquitoes in Marion County’ by Vi Nguyen in the June 10, 2016 edition of Wish TV 8 informs us of the following: “A recycling event is aiming to limit the overall Marion County mosquito population. Residents can drop off scrap or unwanted tires on Saturday at several auto sites around the Indy area. The local health department said old tires left outside will likely collect water over time, becoming a breeding ground for harmful mosquitoes.

Geoff Morris is the GM of the Mosquito Shield company. He says he is quite busy responding to calls for various treatments, saying that they do their best so people can come out and they can actually enjoy their adjacent yards pools or other outdoor activities. Morris says homeowners have worries concerning possible illnesses as the season progresses, particularly focused on concerns of West Nile or Zika-type afflictions.

There are some fundamental steps you can take to protect your home from mosquitoes. You could first start by removing areas of standing water throughout the yard. Removal of old tires, dumping wheel barrels out, any toy buckets etc. Even an inverted garbage can lid with some water in it can create an atmosphere for a mosquito breeding ground. On the south side of Indianapolis, employees at Meineke are ready for a Tire Recycle Day. Zach Dean, the manager, says that last year he had a lot of people participate. It is a good campaign that the city runs where people can dispose of junk car tires for free at (8) different locations.” The full article is available here.

In the May 23, 2016 edition of WTOV9, Ryan Eldredge composed a story titled ‘Target 9 Investigation: Should Ohio require vehicle inspections?’ with the following information: “Brooke County Sheriff Jackson says that one of the largest issues with Ohioans is that they will drive junk vehicles. Many drivers in WV and PA and police have wondered how OH drivers get away with operating cars that appear very unsafe. Ohio is one state that does not have mandatory vehicle safety inspections. Sheriff Jackson feels that there are cars that are rattletraps with fenders held with duct tape.

In WV, drivers must have their vehicles inspected. It is a mandatory requirement and managed by the state police. The cost is $10 per year and most people don’t seem to mind. Jackson says that he wants to have his car inspected and that it is simply a “common sense” thing to do. PA also requires inspections, and a recent study found that the safety inspection program saved many lives each year.

Lt. James Faunda of the OH State Highway Patrol says that troopers are constantly looking for unsafe equipment on a vehicle. When they initiate a traffic stop, regardless of the reason, they look at tires, lights, windshield and such to make sure it is safe to be on the roadways. OH does not have a mandatory inspection requirement like other states, but conduct random inspections. Ohio authorities are aware that vehicles that could cause harm to the public, causing a crash. Lt. Faunda feels that the volume of crashes that are attributed to unsafe vehicles is small. Officials with the OH Highway Patrol say that 1/3 of stops are for suspected unsafe vehicles.” The full article is here: http://wtov9.com/news/local/target-9-investigation-should-ohio-require-vehicle-inspections

Our scrap vehicle buyer is happy to pick up your junk car in the regions of Franklin, Grandview Heights, and Minerva Park. Today we examine the ever-expanding use of plastics and scrap or recycled plastic in auto recycling.

“Auto recyclers have been focusing on the recycling of some car components for many years, particularly steel. Conversely, auto plastic recycling is still in its infancy, since recycling of some plastics and polymer composite-based components can provide challenges in terms of cost, technology required and the very makeup of plastics. Further strides are being made to recycle plastics, however, especially post-industrial scrap, and use recycled plastic materials in car components as auto companies have made strong pledges to reduce waste and use of recycled materials in new vehicles. The overall quality of recycled bales & materials have greatly improved recently, increasing the ability of engineering to use recycled plastic toward production of new components. As segment of our focus of pursuing zero waste, SPI works to leverage the strength throughout the supply chain—from resin suppliers & equipment makers to processors, brand owners & recyclers—by recognizing challenges to recycling across the variety of plastic packaging and products. In the transportation end markets, like automobiles, SPI is beginning projects to help find opportunities for both recycling suitable plastic from automobiles that have reached the end of their useful life, as well as using recycled content to producing new cars & components.

Plastics and particularly recycled plastics are playing a state-of-the-art and growing role in auto makers everywhere. The American Chemistry Councils Plastics Division says plastics make up about 50% of a modern automobile’s volume, but only a mere 10% of its weight. Engineering and design teams seeking cost & weight savings are accepting technological advancements in plastic components for their distinctive properties & flexibility. The paramount catalyst for acceptance of plastics in car designs is surpassing the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards & assisting in boosting a vehicle’s fuel economy. The relative volume of plastics in automobiles is increasing, but with the industry focus on cost reduction, and the recent dip in oil & natural gas values, the market dynamics of using virgin resins vs. recycled materials is shifting. Thus, it is important for automakers to acknowledge the value of using recycled content, in both material properties and the environmental benefits. The true value of recycled material far exceeds any potential savings in cost. The auto industry recognizes trends & purchasing habits of consumers who want firms & products to be environmentally sound. Both domestic and foreign auto makers have been leaders in the green movement, in development of lighter, safer vehicles utilizing alternative fuels. Also, in minimizing overall waste & recycling materials like plastic.” The full study is available at www.plasticsmarketwatch.org
