A recent article on Recycling Today discussed Green Works, a part of Goodwill that is recycling oil filters. They invested in an SB-600 filter baler that is capable of recycling 400 tons of filters on a monthly basis. They are using employees with challenges that operate these machines, providing a few needed jobs. Jay Wilber, who manages the program, claims their practices are “both cost effective and sustainable”. They are receiving these recyclables from auto repair and service shops throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. The EPA site explained how used vehicle oil is recycled. Their estimates show that over 350 million gallons of used oil is recycled each year and is used for the same purpose or alternate purposes. On example is used vehicle oil, which is refined and used either again as motor oil or for fueling furnaces.
