In the May 23, 2016 edition of WTOV9, Ryan Eldredge composed a story titled ‘Target 9 Investigation: Should Ohio require vehicle inspections?’ with the following information: “Brooke County Sheriff Jackson says that one of the largest issues with Ohioans is that they will drive junk vehicles. Many drivers in WV and PA and police have wondered how OH drivers get away with operating cars that appear very unsafe. Ohio is one state that does not have mandatory vehicle safety inspections. Sheriff Jackson feels that there are cars that are rattletraps with fenders held with duct tape.

In WV, drivers must have their vehicles inspected. It is a mandatory requirement and managed by the state police. The cost is $10 per year and most people don’t seem to mind. Jackson says that he wants to have his car inspected and that it is simply a “common sense” thing to do. PA also requires inspections, and a recent study found that the safety inspection program saved many lives each year.

Lt. James Faunda of the OH State Highway Patrol says that troopers are constantly looking for unsafe equipment on a vehicle. When they initiate a traffic stop, regardless of the reason, they look at tires, lights, windshield and such to make sure it is safe to be on the roadways. OH does not have a mandatory inspection requirement like other states, but conduct random inspections. Ohio authorities are aware that vehicles that could cause harm to the public, causing a crash. Lt. Faunda feels that the volume of crashes that are attributed to unsafe vehicles is small. Officials with the OH Highway Patrol say that 1/3 of stops are for suspected unsafe vehicles.” The full article is here: http://wtov9.com/news/local/target-9-investigation-should-ohio-require-vehicle-inspections

A May 18, 2016 article by Jim Hardy in the Mirror informed us of the following: “Feral cats need somewhere nice & warm and they think it’s safe but obviously it’s not. These kittens will stay with us at the sanctuary during the day and staff will take it in turn to take them at night. They apparently need feeding every (2) hours. The staff at the animal sanctuary spent time searching the recycling center for the kittens’ mother, but were unable to find her. Workers at ASM Auto Recycling in Thame, Oxfordshire, were about to crush a scrapped vehicle into a tiny metal cube.

Natalie Clark, the office admin at ASM, says each vehicle has to go through various checks before it is scrapped. They found the kittens in this instance just in time and brought them into the office, prior to notifying the sanctuary. The staff from the sanctuary praised ASM for their diligence in the rescue and thanked supporters for donations which pay for the abandoned animals. According to Iain Atkin without the donations, they would not have the necessary resources to help in these situations.” The complete article is available at this site: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/four-tiny-kittens-rescued-car-7997325

Abandoned Car Towing

In a May 18, 2016 article by Mark White in the News Journal titled ‘Police towing abandoned cars’, we were informed of the following: “The Williamsburg PD has begun towing abandoned vehicles and plan to continue doing so. Police Chief Bird says they’ve been getting complaints throughout the city, particularly on S. 3rd St., a really congested street. There is a large park and a library in that area. School buses are having difficulty time getting up the street. The junk cars had weeds growing up around them–had been there so long. Each of them had canceled registration, no auto insurance and expired tags.  One had concrete blocks behind the wheels; therefore, they decided to start enforce the abandoned vehicle law.

Bird acknowledged that people were upset that police didn’t knock on doors before towing them. Bird says after 21 years on the job that he can’t make everyone happy. It is a state law–not a city ordinance. Bird posted a copy of the state statute regarding vehicle abandonment on the police department’s Facebook page. The law states that a vehicle left for (3) consecutive days shall be assumed to be abandoned. Bird says that if it becomes an eyesore to the community then they will tow it. One comment on social media implied that the city is making money from this– which he disputes, saying they are trying to clean our streets up. Bird noted that he didn’t issue any citations on any of the vehicles that were towed, which he could have done under the law. With court costs plus the fines-it probably could have been over $160 but they chose not to do that.” The full article is available here.

So we have abandoned cars and abandoned cats. Glad to hear that the cats were rescued and also support the city for removing those abandoned vehicles. It seems that the people who have abandoned these old cars think that the community wants to see their junk vehicles cluttering up the streets!

On May 12, 2016 a story titled ‘How GM Generates $1 Billion from Recycling, Reusing Waste Streams’ by Jessica Lyons Hardcastle was posted on Environmental Leader with the following details: “GM is turning trash into cash — nearly $1B in new revenue resulting from recycling & reuse. GM’s latest sustainability report says they have not only saved money, they’ve also generating revenue. In fact, at the end 2015, ninety of their manufacturing operations (53%) and 41% of operations not related to manufacturing were landfill-free. At these sites, about 89% of waste materials are recycled and another 9% are converted to as form of energy. GM estimates reusing, recycling or composting over 2M metric tons of waste material internationally.

John Bradburn is GM’s waste reduction manager, and he participated in an interview with Environmental Leader. Bradburn says the company’s recycling & reuse initiatives were a precursor to their landfill-free program. The company has set high goals recently. According to Bradburn, he pitched a project to sell vehicle components with slight blemishes in the aftermarket market to dealers, rather than throwing them away-which was successful.

Employees water bottles are now recycled into noise-reduction insulation used in vehicles — thus saving money on purchasing new material. GM generates a great deal of metal byproduct, which is separated, sorted and sold, as well as reused within its plants.

Non-ferrous products like aluminum, bronze & magnesium are also separated & sorted at the facilities. With low commodity prices GM is making less on these then before. The company recently published The Business Case for Zero Waste, detailing best practices to help companies generate revenue from its byproducts.” The complete article is available here.

Scrap Auto Plastics

Columbus Cash 4 Cars is an auto buyer serving Franklin County. We buy scrap cars 6 days a week throughout Lake Darby, Westerville, and Huber Ridge. We pay cash for cars in any condition in the areas of Dublin, Madison, and Gahanna. Our scrap vehicle buyer is happy to pick up your junk car in the regions of Franklin, Grandview Heights, and Minerva Park. Today we examine the ever-expanding use of plastics and scrap or recycled plastic in auto recycling.

“Auto recyclers have been focusing on the recycling of some car components for many years, particularly steel. Conversely, auto plastic recycling is still in its infancy, since recycling of some plastics and polymer composite-based components can provide challenges in terms of cost, technology required and the very makeup of plastics. Further strides are being made to recycle plastics, however, especially post-industrial scrap, and use recycled plastic materials in car components as auto companies have made strong pledges to reduce waste and use of recycled materials in new vehicles. The overall quality of recycled bales & materials have greatly improved recently, increasing the ability of engineering to use recycled plastic toward production of new components. As segment of our focus of pursuing zero waste, SPI works to leverage the strength throughout the supply chain—from resin suppliers & equipment makers to processors, brand owners & recyclers—by recognizing challenges to recycling across the variety of plastic packaging and products. In the transportation end markets, like automobiles, SPI is beginning projects to help find opportunities for both recycling suitable plastic from automobiles that have reached the end of their useful life, as well as using recycled content to producing new cars & components.

Plastics and particularly recycled plastics are playing a state-of-the-art and growing role in auto makers everywhere. The American Chemistry Councils Plastics Division says plastics make up about 50% of a modern automobile’s volume, but only a mere 10% of its weight. Engineering and design teams seeking cost & weight savings are accepting technological advancements in plastic components for their distinctive properties & flexibility. The paramount catalyst for acceptance of plastics in car designs is surpassing the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards & assisting in boosting a vehicle’s fuel economy. The relative volume of plastics in automobiles is increasing, but with the industry focus on cost reduction, and the recent dip in oil & natural gas values, the market dynamics of using virgin resins vs. recycled materials is shifting. Thus, it is important for automakers to acknowledge the value of using recycled content, in both material properties and the environmental benefits. The true value of recycled material far exceeds any potential savings in cost. The auto industry recognizes trends & purchasing habits of consumers who want firms & products to be environmentally sound. Both domestic and foreign auto makers have been leaders in the green movement, in development of lighter, safer vehicles utilizing alternative fuels. Also, in minimizing overall waste & recycling materials like plastic.”
