On November 21, 2016 Alex Kwanten & David Kushma composed an article on Auto News with the following details: “Why shouldn’t franchised dealers just forget about auto body repair? Just 40% of U.S. new-vehicle dealers have body shops. Dealers are selling their shops to, or entering into partnerships with, independent chains & consolidators. The big players are in body-center operations these days are Gerber, ABRA, Caliber & ServiceKing. These (4) own nearly 4% of body repair centers in the US & Canada – about four times the number they held (5) years ago. An industry expert predicts their share of the market will rise in 2025. Body repair is a $35B business in the US –a lot of money to cede to competitors

AutoNation Inc., the biggest U.S. dealership group, is structuring its 70 body centers under its retail brand — & plans to launch or acquire at least fifteen more centers within (2) years. AutoNation also is beginning its own line of repair & service parts & is expanding its used-vehicle dealer network, including body repair sites. The goal of these programs is better customer retention in the service departments of all dealers. Experts say not too run your body center as an afterthought. Fully integrate your body shop — even if it’s off-site — with the service department and sales operations. This enables you to take advantage of both the dealership’s & the manufacturers brand value to lure customers.

Each of the (4) major consolidators — Caliber Collision, ServiceKing, ABRA Auto Body & Glass & Gerber Collision & Glass — expects to do more than $1B in business in 2016. Caliber, ABRA & ServiceKing are all privately funded; Gerber is a subsidiary of Boyd Group, a publicly traded Canadian outfit. Romans says the consolidator-owned body shops will account for nearly 15% of total revenue this year & says that figure could rise to more than 20%.

Recently, some franchised dealers & groups — including Fletcher Jones Motorcars, of Newport Beach, CA & Pohanka Auto Group, which operates in the Washington, D.C., area — have sold off their operations to, or otherwise affiliated with, Caliber and others. Other dealers are partnering with body repair chains, notably Carstar. Body shops operated by franchised dealers have some advantages. They get built-in customers. They can mine dealer sales data to sell to repair customers. Automakers often push lease customers to have their cars repaired by dealers with automaker certification, to preserve values. Romans estimates that dealer body shops have a higher chance than independent competitors of repairing new cars during at least the 1st few years on the road. Sonic Automotive Inc. integrates body repair operations in its local markets in a struggle to gain efficient economies of scale. Sonic places its 18 large body repair shops at the center of a hub-&-spoke network. The complete story is available here: http://www.autonews.com/article/20161121/RETAIL05/311219987/1434

“Though the formation and modeling clay is a pastime of many kids, who can craft and recycle the stuff for years, The Ford Motor Co. is taking after the practice as the company marks to recycle about 2,250kg of clay annually. Employing a new idea to model future cars: craft, re-craft and then go to recycling. Ford says nothing is better than constructing a full-size clay model of a vehicle. The digital technology is currently available and the clay figures remain an critical part of the creative design process, helping designers notice issues in both the inside and exterior of a car.

The organization uses over 80 tons of clay annually to construct these vehicle models. None of this material would be reused otherwise but during the last (5) years the company has used an exclusive machine to recycle more than 9,000kg of clay and avoid landfills. They are constantly being influenced by new technology; however, they want to view physical distinctions earlier in the process, and turn it to clay. Model Manager at Ford’s Studio in Dearborn, MI, Lloyd VandenBrink says. Ford wants most of the clay the firm recycles to come out of a milling process, during which designers use a device to help mold the silhouette of a car. Once collected, these clay chips are positioned in the recycling unit – designed to transfer Ford’s special clay materials. The machine pushes and churns the clay with several blades, removing any air from the material. The clay is then strewn through a nozzle which is under heat to achieve the proper consistency so that it then is able to be recycled.” The complete story is available at http://guardian.ng/features/ford-sees-future-in-recycling-car-modelling-clay/

Jerold Chinn posted an article titled ‘Residents reminded of risks of disposing used motor oil’ on sfbay.ca on July 8, 2016 with the following story: “San Francisco officials are retelling residents that discarding used motor oil isn’t safe for the local water system or our environment. It is illegal to dump used oil on the city streets or in the drains. At a press conference Katy Tang, a Supervisor with the Department of the Environment, said that people should recycle used motor oil at businesses such as Pennzoil 10-Min Oil Change. Those who bring in their used motor oil can receive forty cents for each gallon they bring in. These collection sites can accept up (5) gallons per visit. Residents only need to give provide their name when dropping off the oil.

Tang said in a statement that she recalls helping her dad change the oil to their vehicle when she was younger. The department is aggressively promoting a campaign targeting various communities to recycle used oil by placing signs in different languages including Chinese language billboards, municipal bus ads & web ads. Director of the Department of Environment Debbie Raphael, says that it is important to keep the SF Bay area clean of motor oil and to advise residents on how dispose the oil. The neighborhood based collection centers like Pennzoil make it simple and easy for residents to bring in their oil and leave feeling like they’ve done their part to protect the local environment. The city has twenty-three participating auto-related businesses that will take used motor oil, the department said in including (4) in the Sunset District. The department reports that these collection sites collected 27K gallons of oil. About 30% of the oil collected came from specifically the Sunset District. Anyone who attended the press conference was given a complimentary oil pan.”

In reviewing this article, a few thoughts come to mind. Virtually all adults (that have a brain) know that used oil should not be dumped on to the ground or in our drains. Some people may think it is OK to dispose of the used oil in with their trash—which is not true. The true issue is that those choosing to improperly dispose of hazardous oil are likely just lazy or the simply do not care. Those who are found violating these basic environmental laws need to be harshly made aware that we DO care about the issue. For someone who intentionally dumps used motor oil on to the ground or into drains, the punishment for a 1st offense should be something like a combination of an $800 fine and 24 hours of community service.

On May 12, 2016 a story titled ‘How GM Generates $1 Billion from Recycling, Reusing Waste Streams’ by Jessica Lyons Hardcastle was posted on Environmental Leader with the following details: “GM is turning trash into cash — nearly $1B in new revenue resulting from recycling & reuse. GM’s latest sustainability report says they have not only saved money, they’ve also generating revenue. In fact, at the end 2015, ninety of their manufacturing operations (53%) and 41% of operations not related to manufacturing were landfill-free. At these sites, about 89% of waste materials are recycled and another 9% are converted to as form of energy. GM estimates reusing, recycling or composting over 2M metric tons of waste material internationally.

John Bradburn is GM’s waste reduction manager, and he participated in an interview with Environmental Leader. Bradburn says the company’s recycling & reuse initiatives were a precursor to their landfill-free program. The company has set high goals recently. According to Bradburn, he pitched a project to sell vehicle components with slight blemishes in the aftermarket market to dealers, rather than throwing them away-which was successful.

Employees water bottles are now recycled into noise-reduction insulation used in vehicles — thus saving money on purchasing new material. GM generates a great deal of metal byproduct, which is separated, sorted and sold, as well as reused within its plants.

Non-ferrous products like aluminum, bronze & magnesium are also separated & sorted at the facilities. With low commodity prices GM is making less on these then before. The company recently published The Business Case for Zero Waste, detailing best practices to help companies generate revenue from its byproducts.” The complete article is available here.
