A recent story in the Standard Speaker revealed the following:   Four individuals face criminal charges for their alleged involvement in a vehicle “title washing” scheme.  Charges of corrupt groups, dealing in acts of unlawful activity, forgery, “scrubbing” vehicle titles, theft and other offenses were filed against Winston Torres, Bronx, N.Y.; Jose Balbino Cabrera & Joshua Peralta, both of Hazleton; and Luis Santos Fonseca, Bridgeport, Montgomery County. Chief of Police, Jerry Speziale explained that title washing is the process through which a vehicle’s title is changed to hide information such as outstanding liens against the vehicle. This can be done by physically altering paper documents, creating counterfeit copies or reapplying for a title without mentioning the vehicle’s prior history.

These criminals buy (with financing), newer top-end vehicles using stolen or fake identities and counterfeit IDs, such as licenses. They obtain loans in the names of victims who are not aware and receive the vehicles. Once the group has possession of the cars, phony titles that reflect no lien holder information are generated. Then the titles are taken to several notaries, where an application can be filed for a new PA title.

After receiving a valid PA title for these cars they are taken to the Port of Miami, and are exported to the Dominican Republic for significant profits.  Since payments are obviously deliquent the identity theft victims’ credit is negatively impacted and the banks lose their collateral.  The estimated financial burden was apparently $263,267.

Residential units house smaller systems that produce 5-10 KW of electricity and can be placed in garages. More expensive per kilowatt hours, they are usually used for backup power (rather than generators) or to absorb rooftop solar production. These are used for frequency regulation or renewable smoothing – the most common use today. As for Tesla, it will sell its residential units for about $3,500, but the cost doesn’t include “inverters” that handle voltage levels during operation. They are lithium-ion batteries, which can discharge for about one hour. Many different storage technologies exist and demands are stringent. They are hoping to match the energy produced with the energy their potential use, which may be hard to do.

Other battery companies are also trying to enter the utility business. With 100+ employees, Pittsburgh-based Aquion Energy has started producing batteries that allow utilities to better handle their grids. On June 3, 2016 Lindsey Smith posted a story on The Verge titled ‘Wall Street loans Uber $1 billion to offer subprime auto leases’ with the following information: “Uber, in efforts to appease its drivers, has obtained a $1B loan in an agreement with Goldman Sachs to for new vehicle leases for drivers. The now giant reide-share, Xchange Leasing, LLC, was the recipient of the massive loan, beginning in July 2015. Xchange allows sub-prime leases to those who drive for Uber, but have subpar credit. Uber’s big Vehicle Solutions program, has developed after the organization realized that many drivers had vehicles that were too old, too small, or didn’t meet standards in some ways. In addition, the program offers drivers discounts with specific auto manufacturers, more traditional financing, as well as rental.

The major selling point is its flexibility. To obtain the lease, drivers submit a $250 deposit; and payments on a weekly basis — which average around $125+— are deducted directly from driver paychecks. Unlike most sub-prime leases, which often have harsh terms, they offer unlimited mileage & regular maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, and filter replacements. Also, drivers can return the cars with (2) weeks’ notice at any time 30 days after their 1^st payment. When the lease expires, either through early termination or at the end of the 36 month terms, drivers owe a final $250. A driver’s credit score won’t be impacted by early termination; on the flipside, leases do not help to build a person’s credit, even if payments are made properly.

Despite the flexibility, critics note the higher cost associated with the leases. If drivers keep the cars for the 3-year term, they will have spent thousands at a higher purchase price. Higher costs are the norm with subprime leases & Xchange’s terms are similar. These leases are often the lone option for those who are a credit risk. The big plans of expanding are not without risk, especially when leasing to people with poor credit. The agreement between Xchange and its lenders loans Xchange $1B up front, at a fixed interest %, shifting some of the risk to investors. Uber has no legal ties under the agreement.
