With 100+ employees, Pittsburgh-based Aquion Energy has started producing batteries that allow utilities to better handle their grids. Aquion is offering the battery technology at a Duke Energy’s site, which is now testing their 1st battery technology at a substation in NC — one that is demonstrating quick response, real-time smoothing and load transfer. Battery storage could also allow wind and solar developers to grow in the marketplace, making the grids more efficient, and eliminate the need to increase power production to cover heavy loads. Until the price of batteries is reduced, progress will be slow; other green energy supporters say the problem is simply scale. Once advanced batteries are produced in vast quantities, the overall production costs associated with them will fall.
