Columbus Area Cleanup Program

The Sustainable Columbus site explains how local municipalities are cracking down on illegal dumping. Some of the products that sometime appear scattered include old furniture, construction project debris, and other unwanted stuff. This problem poses human health risks, harms the environment, degrades water quality, and is visually unappealing. The inspectors request that citizens who witness this inappropriate activity make notes of key information including location, license plates, model of vehicle, etc.

Fourteen vehicles that were impounded in the Dayton area were apparently scrapped when an error occurred during a transfer of roughly 600 vehicles between to regional auto companies. These fourteen were for some reason sent to a West Carrolton scrap site and dismantled, despite not having the proper paperwork to do so. Lindsey Bohrer, spokeswoman for the Ohio BMV, says that such junk car processors and salvage companies are still required to obtain the title for vehicles before destroying them. The title information is then forwarded to the state to account for the whereabouts of them. The prosecutor’s office is reviewing the situation with the local authorities. The majority of these vehicles were said to have been there for a lengthy period of time. No apparent criminally-based intent is believed to have occurred. Ordinarily, unclaimed vehicles are stored while attempts are made to contact the owner.

The most common regret among those scrapping cars is that they just bought new tires, unfortunately doesn’t add anything to the value of a junk car.

The following except is from Joel Makower in The State of Green Business, 2016: “Water scarcity — due to extended periods of drought, climate changes and over-usage of the scarce resources — emerged as a large news story recently. Further impacting the effects on our health and ecosystems, water shortages hinder many business activities. Companies have ordered water savings within their internal activities, as well as for their suppliers. The new trend between 2010 and 2014 has been organizations using less water. Those using less water (down 1% for U.S. firms) and a bit higher water use globally (up 4%). They are also using less water per unit of earnings. Increased usage in 2012 and 2013 demonstrated the need to employ more efficient operations. For U.S. companies, the most noteworthy savings have been in acquired water from municipalities (down 13% for the 5-year period) and cooling water (down 10 %). Globally, firms procured less water from cities by 5% and cooling water by 4%. However, direct extraction of groundwater or surface water has increased among U.S. firms (up 1%) and significantly among global companies (up 32%). Similarly, supply-chain water usage spiked for the U.S. (up 5%) and global firms (up 6%).

Comparative improvements in water use concentration are more promising. Use has decreased for almost all types of water use. The biggest decreases have been for bought water from municipalities (down 25 % among both U.S. and global firms), cooling water (down 23 percent in the U.S. and 17 percent globally), direct withdrawal of groundwater or surface water (down 12 percent among U.S. companies) and supply-line water use (down 11% in the U.S.). The only enlarged water use intensity stemmed from directly withdrawing ground or surface water for global companies (up 14%). Corporate programs to limit water use will continue to be critical for viable environmental sustainability, particularly as water scarcity impacts more regions and climate changes alter the normal water cycle. As a positive indicator, water usage and intensity are overall decreasing. However, absolute water usage still is higher and is therefore a problem to business as usual. This seems to indicate that companies haven’t fully determined how to keep the bottom line without heightening water usage. There isn’t a need to alter this trend and thus further continuous developments in water efficiency.” The full story can be located here: https://www.greenbiz.com/article/state-green-business-2016

A recent article by Lisa Bernard-Kuhn on wcpo.com titled ‘Could toxic chemicals along the Ohio River be a danger to our drinking water?’ with the following information: “At a dormant Duke Energy power plant, at least 10 billion lbs. of coal ash containing toxins plus more are sitting on the banks of the OH River – a resource of drinking water for more than 5M people. How the polluted ponds got there began well before environmental laws were created to keep people & drinking water safe from potentially hazardous waste. How much longer these might stay — and put the drinking water at risk — is a drama just beginning.

Clermont County Commissioner David Uible says that thinking about what happened in Flint, MI is just how important water is to public health and safety; to think that we have a water supply adjacent to ash pits is unbelievable. The worst-case scenario is that you get a flood on the Ohio River that breaches the dams and all the ash is washed into the river. As early as next year, Duke has said it will begin deconstructing the old plant. The utility giant closed the plant in 2014 just as the U.S. EPA was instituting new standards for how coal ash ponds are managed.

Federal rules in 2015 set new standards for coal ash pond guidelines. OH is one of the largest coal ash generators in the US, and has some of the worst state regulations. The company has been conducting scientific & engineering studies at the site to figure out the best method to safely close these basins. They point to incidents in Pennsylvania, Tennessee and North Carolina where lack of maintenance and attention at aging power plants leading to large spills of coal ash into local rivers and streams from ponds like in Beckjord.” The article is available in its entirety at this link.

In the May 23, 2016 edition of WTOV9, Ryan Eldredge composed a story titled ‘Target 9 Investigation: Should Ohio require vehicle inspections?’ with the following information: “Brooke County Sheriff Jackson says that one of the largest issues with Ohioans is that they will drive junk vehicles. Many drivers in WV and PA and police have wondered how OH drivers get away with operating cars that appear very unsafe. Ohio is one state that does not have mandatory vehicle safety inspections. Sheriff Jackson feels that there are cars that are rattletraps with fenders held with duct tape.

In WV, drivers must have their vehicles inspected. It is a mandatory requirement and managed by the state police. The cost is $10 per year and most people don’t seem to mind. Jackson says that he wants to have his car inspected and that it is simply a “common sense” thing to do. PA also requires inspections, and a recent study found that the safety inspection program saved many lives each year.

Lt. James Faunda of the OH State Highway Patrol says that troopers are constantly looking for unsafe equipment on a vehicle. When they initiate a traffic stop, regardless of the reason, they look at tires, lights, windshield and such to make sure it is safe to be on the roadways. OH does not have a mandatory inspection requirement like other states, but conduct random inspections. Ohio authorities are aware that vehicles that could cause harm to the public, causing a crash. Lt. Faunda feels that the volume of crashes that are attributed to unsafe vehicles is small. Officials with the OH Highway Patrol say that 1/3 of stops are for suspected unsafe vehicles.” The full article is here: http://wtov9.com/news/local/target-9-investigation-should-ohio-require-vehicle-inspections
