A November 28, 2016 article in Tire Business told us the following: “Women in Auto Care awarded $60,000 in scholarships to twenty high school and post-secondary students recently, including one $10,000 scholarship to Summer Miller, a student in auto technology at Brookhaven College in Decatur, TX. Formerly known as the Car Care Council Women’s Board (WB), has been bestowing scholarships to young women seeking careers in the auto trades for over 14 years. It publicized the 2016 winners at a press conference during the new Auto Aftermarket Parts Expo (AAPEX) in Las Vegas. Applicants for these scholarships are graded on various criteria, including: essay; activities/volunteering, etc.; grades/GPA; class performance; financials; and industry obligations.

Ms. Miller was granted the Kathleen Schmatz Scholarship, named after the former president and CEO of the Auto Care Association.  This scholarship included a trip to the 2017 AAPEX. Ms. Miller says that the scholarship allows her to focus more on her classes & grades without worrying about tuition. She felt blessed that Women in Auto Care saw her potential and was willing to assist her to achieve goals.  This is Ms. Miller’s 2nd industry scholarship. In 2015 she earned a $2,500 scholarship from Federal-Mogul Motorparts.

The application process for the 2017 scholarships is new available at their website.  The deadline is in March 2017. Those applying must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better. High school applicants must be in their senior year, planning on attending an ASE-certified, post-secondary auto technology program, while post-secondary tech applicants must have already completed 1-year at an ASE-certified, auto technology program.”

A story from Fox 8 News New Orleans brings us the news about unwanted vehicles as follows: “The New Orleans Dept of Public Works will officially have an abandoned car auction on Tuesday, November 29. The location at Almonaster Auto Pound on 10200 Almonaster Ave. begins at 9 a.m. Vehicle previewing and registration is slated for Monday, November 28 from 9 am to 4 pm. The city hopes to sell off roughly 63 vehicles. Each of these vehicles was either discarded on a neighborhood street or left behind by someone with excessive parking fines & fees. The city has previously conducted thirty-one such auctions since 2010. They have sold off roughly 3,055 abandoned cars, which contributed over $2M toward the city’s general funds. The buyer price has a $50 administrative fee added on to obtain a notarized title after making the payment. This is done to allow the buyer to forego bringing the paperwork to the DMV to apply for titling.

All auto information is currently on Brown’s Auction Web site, www.brownsauction.com. On the specific terms of the contract, the available car list includes the VIN, make, year, model, & lien holder information. Any auction-relative inquiries should be forwarded to Brown’s Auction Co. This present auction will be marketed on Friday, November 25. Before the auction, efforts are made to reach the vehicle’s owner or lien holder before the cars are placed on the block. Vehicle possessors or lien holders may choose to pay off all fines & fees and retrieve their vehicles before the event. Only cash or cashier’s checks are accepted. Payment must be done on the day of the auction. If payment isn’t received, the vehicle will be re-placed for the next event, and the $50 deposit is lost. The $50 admin fee will be extra for each purchased vehicle therefore giving buyers a notarized title to that car. They ask that city workers and relatives of them abstain from participating.”  The full article is available at this link.

On November 21, 2016 Alex Kwanten & David Kushma composed an article on Auto News with the following details: “Why shouldn’t franchised dealers just forget about auto body repair? Just 40% of U.S. new-vehicle dealers have body shops. Dealers are selling their shops to, or entering into partnerships with, independent chains & consolidators. The big players are in body-center operations these days are Gerber, ABRA, Caliber & ServiceKing. These (4) own nearly 4% of body repair centers in the US & Canada – about four times the number they held (5) years ago. An industry expert predicts their share of the market will rise in 2025. Body repair is a $35B business in the US –a lot of money to cede to competitors

AutoNation Inc., the biggest U.S. dealership group, is structuring its 70 body centers under its retail brand — & plans to launch or acquire at least fifteen more centers within (2) years. AutoNation also is beginning its own line of repair & service parts & is expanding its used-vehicle dealer network, including body repair sites. The goal of these programs is better customer retention in the service departments of all dealers. Experts say not too run your body center as an afterthought. Fully integrate your body shop — even if it’s off-site — with the service department and sales operations. This enables you to take advantage of both the dealership’s & the manufacturers brand value to lure customers.

Each of the (4) major consolidators — Caliber Collision, ServiceKing, ABRA Auto Body & Glass & Gerber Collision & Glass — expects to do more than $1B in business in 2016. Caliber, ABRA & ServiceKing are all privately funded; Gerber is a subsidiary of Boyd Group, a publicly traded Canadian outfit. Romans says the consolidator-owned body shops will account for nearly 15% of total revenue this year & says that figure could rise to more than 20%.

Recently, some franchised dealers & groups — including Fletcher Jones Motorcars, of Newport Beach, CA & Pohanka Auto Group, which operates in the Washington, D.C., area — have sold off their operations to, or otherwise affiliated with, Caliber and others. Other dealers are partnering with body repair chains, notably Carstar. Body shops operated by franchised dealers have some advantages. They get built-in customers. They can mine dealer sales data to sell to repair customers. Automakers often push lease customers to have their cars repaired by dealers with automaker certification, to preserve values. Romans estimates that dealer body shops have a higher chance than independent competitors of repairing new cars during at least the 1st few years on the road. Sonic Automotive Inc. integrates body repair operations in its local markets in a struggle to gain efficient economies of scale. Sonic places its 18 large body repair shops at the center of a hub-&-spoke network. The complete story is available here: http://www.autonews.com/article/20161121/RETAIL05/311219987/1434
