However, direct extraction of groundwater or surface water has increased among U.S. firms (up 1%) and significantly among global companies (up 32%). Similarly, supply-chain water usage spiked for the U.S. (up 5%) and global firms (up 6%).

Comparative improvements in water use concentration are more promising. Use has decreased for almost all types of water use. The biggest decreases have been for bought water from municipalities (down 25 % among both U.S. and global firms), cooling water (down 23 percent in the U.S. and 17 percent globally), direct withdrawal of groundwater or surface water (down 12 percent among U.S. companies) and supply-line water use (down 11% in the U.S.). The only enlarged water use intensity stemmed from directly withdrawing ground or surface water for global companies (up 14%). Corporate programs to limit water use will continue to be critical for viable environmental sustainability, particularly as water scarcity impacts more regions and climate changes alter the normal water cycle. As a positive indicator, water usage and intensity are overall decreasing. However, absolute water usage still is higher and is therefore a problem to business as usual. This seems to indicate that companies haven’t fully determined how to keep the bottom line without heightening water usage. Dross is formed naturally during aluminum smelting; reactions with oxygen form aluminum oxide at a higher rate during the melting process due to the increased processing temperature. During liquefaction of aluminum product, the aluminum oxide films on the product of the individual particulates come to the surface of the molten volume. This by-product is filtered and sent to a dross processor for further recovery. White dross is a type that forms when no salt flux is used during the melting. Salt cake is a by-product of white dross processes and consists of close composition to that of black dross. A similar composition results because a salt fluxing agent that is utilized during white dross processing to extract aluminum-based units. Salt cake & black dross consist of different compositional proportions of aluminum, aluminum oxide & salt flux.

A spike in production increases the aluminum metal unit loss, thus decreasing the recycling rate of auto aluminum. Many reasons attribute to this limit including purity of the melt and, as discussed, surface area to volume ratio. Mixes of aluminum scrap products, possibly mixed with primary aluminum, are commonly charged together to generate the required secondary aluminum alloy. Secondary aluminum recovery processors understand and quantify the metal yield expected from each charge and identify how each mix amid constituent affects this yield. Due to the variable nature of these charge mixtures, distinguishing them into two categories, heavy and light recovery processes, although not handled separately in most cases, permits an appropriate melt yield to be credited to the scrap class that is being recovered to form a new aluminum material.” To view the complete study click here.

A study co-authored by the Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling, Metal Processing Institute, and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute reported some interesting data: “The total recycling rate for auto aluminum is 91%. These surveys covered 5% of the US’ dismantling industry considering the amount of end-of-life (ELVs) vehicles entering the survey responder’s lots, 32% of the downstream separation industry based on volumetric throughput and 60-70% of the secondary aluminum processing sector based on market share statements. The measured average material collection percentage for ELVs that go through a dismantling outfit and a downstream separation system is 99.7%. The major hindrance for the auto aluminum recycling percentage stems from the recovery processes. The product when in the form of aluminum oxide is brought to a landfill from these processes. When a heavier gauge scrap category is charged, referred to for our purposes as a heavy recovery process, the metal yield of 95% is typical. Light gauge scrap melting is believed to generate in a metal yield of 91%, and the method is termed as a light recovery process in the report. Most of auto aluminum is light gauge, mixed, or shredded scrap. It’s been stated that 86% of obsolete auto-aluminum is charged in this form.

Analyzing the sensitivity to determine a minimum & maximum auto aluminum recycling percentage (RR%) for the US. This RR% range is 80% – 98%. The measured average of 91% falls between there and is believed to be much more indicative of the overall industry versus these extremes. This report provides a basis of the variability of the secondary aluminum production sector specifically relative to auto aluminum gathering and recovery.
