On July 5, 2016 an article titled ‘US Auto Fuel Economy Rating Slips in June’ composed by Paul Ausick explained the following: “The average fuel-economy rating for newer cars sold in the US for June 2016 was 25.3 MPG, down 0.1 mpg compared with the month of May . For all 2015, the overall average fuel-economy rating for new vehicles sold was 25.3 mpg.
While the window paper average is 5.2 mpg higher than when the information were first gathered, the average is still 0.5 mpg below its all-time high of 25.8 mpg set in August 2014. When gas prices started falling in the US, consumers purchased more light trucks, SUVs and crossovers, which get lower mpg ratings and contribute to the low average. The information are based on the average sales-weighted fuel-efficiency rating printed on a newer car’s window sticker and is compiled by Michael Sivak & Brandon Schoettle of the University of Michigan’s Transportation Institute.
The sales-weighted unadjusted Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) efficiency rating averaged 31.7 MPG in May, up 0.4 mpg month over month and an improvement of 7.0 mpg since October 2007. These numeric values aren’t clearly comparable to the ratings because these are adjusted by the EPA & used to gauge the window-sticker ratings. Overall vehicle sales in the month of June rose 2.5% 1.51M units. For the year to date, sales are up 1.5% versus 2015. On a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) scale, the sum fell from 17.46M units in May to 16.68M units in June. In June 2015 the SAAR came in at 17.01 million units.” The full article is available at this link: http://247wallst.com/autos/2016/07/05/us-auto-fuel-economy-rating-slips-in-june/
