An article Phil LeBeau on WTHR NBC on December 5, 2016 explains the following: “A new study found many in the U.S. are driving a car that is approximately 11-12 years old. With cars retailing at high prices, people are extending out their vehicle loans to keep their payments as low as possible. Cars and trucks have developed to be more reliable so folks hang on to them longer.  In fact, those purchasing new vehicles today typically own them for almost 7 years – which is nearly 3 years longer than in 2001.

The economics are inspiring the consumer to retain their vehicles longer and because that the vehicle is mechanically better these days that certainly allow for them to hang on to them for longer periods because of the economic factors.  All of this is welcome news for the vehicle industry. Auto components sellers like it because people replace brakes, spark plugs and other components in older cars. If the auto owners aren’t doing it themselves, they are bringing their cars in to a mechanic which means new car dealerships have more occasions to convince consumers it is time to trade in the older models for a newer ones with the latest and greatest features. There are so many new developments that are found in newer autos today that if you find yourself driving an older vehicle, it is similar to calling your friends on a rotary telephone.  Cars manufactured in the 1990s and early 2000s might lack the amenities of the newer cars, but they will stay on the road for potentially a few more years to come. By 2021, it is estimated that 20M cars in America will be a minimum of twenty-five years old.” The complete article is available here.

In an August 22, 2016 story by Arlena Sawyers on Automotive News, we learned the following: “In 2016, used-vehicle prices should drop because of the heightened supply of off-lease vehicles. First, strong demand for pre-owned trucks caused prices to rise off-setting lower used-car prices, especially in the small-to-mid segments. Better economic conditions and an industry that understands how to buy, price and sell used vehicles also helped prices this year.

Forecasters say used-vehicle depreciation will worsen in the 2nd half of the year, driven by a rise in the supply of used vehicles & in new-vehicle incentives. Jonathan Banks, executive analyst at NADA Used Car Guide, expects used-vehicle pricing to soften more this year, but he admits he is surprised at the resilience of the market. Better marketing strategy, such as in the certified pre-owned segment, has helped, he says. Banks says 3.1M off-lease vehicles are expected to return to the market this year, an increase from 2.3M in 2015. That number is expected to grow to 3.4M in 2017 and 3.8M in 2018.

Prices of pre-owned subcompact cars have taken the biggest hit this year, with prices dropping 20% through July vs. a drop of just over 13% in the year-earlier period. Yet the segment’s 3.9% price decline matched the average for that period in the prior (3) years. Conversely, through July, full-size pickups were down almost 7% compared to about 3% last year. The strong economy, including credit availability and low interest rates, are the reasons used-vehicle prices have sustained this year.” The complete article is available here.

On June 22, 2016 an article was posted on Environmental Leader by Ken Silverstein titled ‘Recycling and Reusing is Good for the Environment and the Company’ with the following details: “When it comes to formalizing your company’s brand and image on reducing and recycling you nearly apply it to every material in the shop. That’s a key point that the ISS’ head of sustainability Dan Gilbert made at Environmental Leader’s recent conference in a session about sustainability. The ultimate goal, he said, is to create “zero waste,” which can mean cutting anywhere from 90% to 100% of what your company is puts in landfills. The final 10%, he emphasized, is where the real work is. To get there, businesses should be measuring and managing their waste streams, and reporting their progress at least on a quarterly basis.

If you save money, your corporate leaders are more than likely to get behind the initiative. While those sustainability efforts require an upfront outlay in time and resources, they build affinity in communities and among customers. Some examples: Computers would be the worst thing to toss in the landfill. This is since they have so many metals and that can leach into the ground water system. Other things that businesses can recycle include supplies, equipment, boxes, shelving and miscellaneous racks.

The companies that take those items might pay those donating for the materials that will eventually go into new products. If a mobile phone is built from recycled components, it prevented waste from going into the landfill and it has created a perfectly good use of still viable components. Companies with their own cafeterias, furthermore, can compost their food scrap rather than toss it in the trash. Food scraps are heavy and they break down and create methane gases. It is possible to be composted and that enriches the soil. Things like plastic pieces, tableware and coffee cups can also be eco-friendly — meaning they are biodegradable.

All businesses can take steps to be more environmentally friendly. One of the fastest ways to do so is to create separate containers for the recyclables and the real trash — but not to mix together. A single-stream deposit in which everything goes into a single bin is better than having various ones for different items. As for the companies that have to invest in these bins, it can be hard enough to get them to buy one, much less 4 of them. A local place to put all recyclables is usually the best solution. Having difficulty finding a vendor to pick them up? Start with the hauler that picks your trash. And if that doesn’t work, get on Google and look for one. He points to a recent Utah State University report that found 20-40% percent of the objects that go into the trash could have been recycled.” The complete article is available here.
