In February 26, 2017 edition of Auto News, Sharon Silke Carty posted a story of interest as follows: “Those making auto payments with that have poor credit are sometime subjected to surveillance from their auto loan lenders, who install GPS tracking devices and kill switches on the car to disable it if the owner fails to keep up with the payments on time. Now the FTC is taking a look at this exercise to see if the devices are a violation of consumer privacy or can be considered harassment from the banks. Credit Acceptance Corp., based in Southfield, Mich., says it is being investigated by the FTC involving its policies & practices for using the devices.

Bloomberg reported that another lender, DriveTime Auto, is also being looked into. DriveTime told Bloomberg it does not use kill switches, but the autos that it finances have GPS trackers already installed. These devices are being used increasingly as the pool of subprime auto loans increases. The Fed Reserve Bank of NY says that subprime auto loans are rising, along with an increase in delinquencies. About 6M people were 90 behind on their car payments at the close of 2016, according to a recent study by the bank. Devices such as kill switches & GPS tracking units help lenders lower losses when loans are unpaid by allowing  faster repossession according to Michael Benoit, partner at Hudson Cook, a law firm focused on consumer financial services.” The entire article is available at this link.

In an August 22, 2016 story by Arlena Sawyers on Automotive News, we learned the following: “In 2016, used-vehicle prices should drop because of the heightened supply of off-lease vehicles. First, strong demand for pre-owned trucks caused prices to rise off-setting lower used-car prices, especially in the small-to-mid segments. Better economic conditions and an industry that understands how to buy, price and sell used vehicles also helped prices this year.

Forecasters say used-vehicle depreciation will worsen in the 2nd half of the year, driven by a rise in the supply of used vehicles & in new-vehicle incentives. Jonathan Banks, executive analyst at NADA Used Car Guide, expects used-vehicle pricing to soften more this year, but he admits he is surprised at the resilience of the market. Better marketing strategy, such as in the certified pre-owned segment, has helped, he says. Banks says 3.1M off-lease vehicles are expected to return to the market this year, an increase from 2.3M in 2015. That number is expected to grow to 3.4M in 2017 and 3.8M in 2018.

Prices of pre-owned subcompact cars have taken the biggest hit this year, with prices dropping 20% through July vs. a drop of just over 13% in the year-earlier period. Yet the segment’s 3.9% price decline matched the average for that period in the prior (3) years. Conversely, through July, full-size pickups were down almost 7% compared to about 3% last year. The strong economy, including credit availability and low interest rates, are the reasons used-vehicle prices have sustained this year.” The complete article is available here.

A recent article by Lisa Bernard-Kuhn on wcpo.com titled ‘Could toxic chemicals along the Ohio River be a danger to our drinking water?’ with the following information: “At a dormant Duke Energy power plant, at least 10 billion lbs. of coal ash containing toxins plus more are sitting on the banks of the OH River – a resource of drinking water for more than 5M people. How the polluted ponds got there began well before environmental laws were created to keep people & drinking water safe from potentially hazardous waste. How much longer these might stay — and put the drinking water at risk — is a drama just beginning.

Clermont County Commissioner David Uible says that thinking about what happened in Flint, MI is just how important water is to public health and safety; to think that we have a water supply adjacent to ash pits is unbelievable. The worst-case scenario is that you get a flood on the Ohio River that breaches the dams and all the ash is washed into the river. As early as next year, Duke has said it will begin deconstructing the old plant. The utility giant closed the plant in 2014 just as the U.S. EPA was instituting new standards for how coal ash ponds are managed.

Federal rules in 2015 set new standards for coal ash pond guidelines. OH is one of the largest coal ash generators in the US, and has some of the worst state regulations. The company has been conducting scientific & engineering studies at the site to figure out the best method to safely close these basins. They point to incidents in Pennsylvania, Tennessee and North Carolina where lack of maintenance and attention at aging power plants leading to large spills of coal ash into local rivers and streams from ponds like in Beckjord.” The article is available in its entirety at this link.
