Recycling Efforts in Columbus, Ohio

A recent post in the Columbus Dispatch addressed that the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) is actively continuing eco-friendly measures. For example, the organization is promoting the idea of representing a circular economy, meaning that resources should always be recycled, repurposed, or reused in some way. According to their polling data, more than 90% of respondents agreed that recycling should remain among the key priorities.

One key trend involves transitioning old beverage containers into forms that allows for their reuse in new products. This program is now among those that recyclers use statewide.

Fourteen vehicles that were impounded in the Dayton area were apparently scrapped when an error occurred during a transfer of roughly 600 vehicles between to regional auto companies. These fourteen were for some reason sent to a West Carrolton scrap site and dismantled, despite not having the proper paperwork to do so. Lindsey Bohrer, spokeswoman for the Ohio BMV, says that such junk car processors and salvage companies are still required to obtain the title for vehicles before destroying them. The title information is then forwarded to the state to account for the whereabouts of them. The prosecutor’s office is reviewing the situation with the local authorities. The majority of these vehicles were said to have been there for a lengthy period of time. No apparent criminally-based intent is believed to have occurred. Ordinarily, unclaimed vehicles are stored while attempts are made to contact the owner.

Recycling reduces unnecessary levels of pollution associated with the manufacturing processes. In an August 22, 2016 story by Arlena Sawyers on Automotive News, we learned the following: “In 2016, used-vehicle prices should drop because of the heightened supply of off-lease vehicles. First, strong demand for pre-owned trucks caused prices to rise off-setting lower used-car prices, especially in the small-to-mid segments. Better economic conditions and an industry that understands how to buy, price and sell used vehicles also helped prices this year.

Forecasters say used-vehicle depreciation will worsen in the 2nd half of the year, driven by a rise in the supply of used vehicles & in new-vehicle incentives. Jonathan Banks, executive analyst at NADA Used Car Guide, expects used-vehicle pricing to soften more this year, but he admits he is surprised at the resilience of the market. Better marketing strategy, such as in the certified pre-owned segment, has helped, he says. Banks says 3.1M off-lease vehicles are expected to return to the market this year, an increase from 2.3M in 2015. That number is expected to grow to 3.4M in 2017 and 3.8M in 2018.

Prices of pre-owned subcompact cars have taken the biggest hit this year, with prices dropping 20% through July vs. a drop of just over 13% in the year-earlier period. Yet the segment’s 3.9% price decline matched the average for that period in the prior (3) years. Conversely, through July, full-size pickups were down almost 7% compared to about 3% last year. The strong economy, including credit availability and low interest rates, are the reasons used-vehicle prices have sustained this year.”

A salvage car can certainly be an eyesore when left sitting around in Truro, Madison, or Gahanna. Each and every business should consider taking steps to be more environmentally friendly.

A CA Department of Resources Recycling & Recovery’s recent report tells us the following: “The earliest known use of scrap tires in engineering-related applications occurred in the 1970s, when waste tires were used for building breakwaters and reefs. Use of junk tires in these applications was very limited through the 1980s. Since the late-eighties, CalRecycle has begun a variety of initiatives to greatly increase the volume of waste tires that are put to a use instead than being sent to a landfill. A few programs have focused on research & market development for recycling scrap tires into TDA for varying applications. Illegal dumping, environmentally and financially horrific tire pile fires led CA to accelerate its movement toward beneficial uses of TDA.

The first transportation-related project using TDA in CA was an embankment project built in 2000 near Milpitas, CA at the Dixon Landing. The properties of TDA make for significant savings on this project. Utilizing TDA in civil engineering projects has become a big part of CalRecycle’s effort to divert these tires from landfills. As additional projects are completed, such use of TDA is quickly becoming attractive as an option for both. One of TDA’s biggest benefits is that it is lightweight. It also has great thermal insulation properties.” The complete story is available here.

Our scrap vehicle buyer is happy to pick up your junk car in the regions of Franklin, Grandview Heights, and Minerva Park. Today we examine the ever-expanding use of plastics and scrap or recycled plastic in auto recycling.

“Auto recyclers have been focusing on the recycling of some car components for many years, particularly steel. Conversely, auto plastic recycling is still in its infancy, since recycling of some plastics and polymer composite-based components can provide challenges in terms of cost, technology required and the very makeup of plastics. Further strides are being made to recycle plastics, however, especially post-industrial scrap, and use recycled plastic materials in car components as auto companies have made strong pledges to reduce waste and use of recycled materials in new vehicles. The overall quality of recycled bales & materials have greatly improved recently, increasing the ability of engineering to use recycled plastic toward production of new components. As segment of our focus of pursuing zero waste, SPI works to leverage the strength throughout the supply chain—from resin suppliers & equipment makers to processors, brand owners & recyclers—by recognizing challenges to recycling across the variety of plastic packaging and products. In the transportation end markets, like automobiles, SPI is beginning projects to help find opportunities for both recycling suitable plastic from automobiles that have reached the end of their useful life, as well as using recycled content to producing new cars & components.

Plastics and particularly recycled plastics are playing a state-of-the-art and growing role in auto makers everywhere. The American Chemistry Councils Plastics Division says plastics make up about 50% of a modern automobile’s volume, but only a mere 10% of its weight. Engineering and design teams seeking cost & weight savings are accepting technological advancements in plastic components for their distinctive properties & flexibility. The paramount catalyst for acceptance of plastics in car designs is surpassing the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards & assisting in boosting a vehicle’s fuel economy. The relative volume of plastics in automobiles is increasing, but with the industry focus on cost reduction, and the recent dip in oil & natural gas values, the market dynamics of using virgin resins vs. recycled materials is shifting. Thus, it is important for automakers to acknowledge the value of using recycled content, in both material properties and the environmental benefits. The true value of recycled material far exceeds any potential savings in cost. The auto industry recognizes trends & purchasing habits of consumers who want firms & products to be environmentally sound. Both domestic and foreign auto makers have been leaders in the green movement, in development of lighter, safer vehicles utilizing alternative fuels. Also, in minimizing overall waste & recycling materials like plastic.”
