At the University of Indiana, they produced a report known as the A Macroeconomic Study of Federal and State Automotive Regulations. Here is an excerpt relating to consumer fuel savings: “Vehicles powered by electricity may save a consumer roughly $5,700 to $7,400 over the period of ownership on fuel. Buyers may have a perception regarding fuel costs that do not reflect federal agency projections. Most buyers do not plan on retaining a newly purchased automobile for its entire useful lifespan. These cars can last for approximately 13 – 15 years and most buyers keep cars for 6 to 7 years and then consider trading it in when ready to buy again.

In the 1970s period during the oil embargo, Chrysler tried introducing two models which were “ultra-efficient”, the Feather Duster and the Dart Lite. They did not have great success with these models at the time. During the 1990s, Honda remained focused on offering fuel efficient vehicles compared to their competitors. Although difficult to quantify, it did not seem that Honda truly benefitted from their enhanced fuel efficiency and have since not focused on MPG as much. In other countries where fuel costs are much higher, they have persisted in leading the market in this category. Studies have difficulty proving that U.S. consumers are highly motivated to buy cars based exclusively on fuel efficiency; however, time will probably tell as more of these vehicles enter the market at comparable prices to traditionally powered cars. A recent article by Lisa Bernard-Kuhn on wcpo.com titled ‘Could toxic chemicals along the Ohio River be a danger to our drinking water?’ with the following information: “At a dormant Duke Energy power plant, at least 10 billion lbs. of coal ash containing toxins plus more are sitting on the banks of the OH River – a resource of drinking water for more than 5M people. How the polluted ponds got there began well before environmental laws were created to keep people & drinking water safe from potentially hazardous waste. How much longer these might stay — and put the drinking water at risk — is a drama just beginning.

Clermont County Commissioner David Uible says that thinking about what happened in Flint, MI is just how important water is to public health and safety; to think that we have a water supply adjacent to ash pits is unbelievable. The worst-case scenario is that you get a flood on the Ohio River that breaches the dams and all the ash is washed into the river. As early as next year, Duke has said it will begin deconstructing the old plant. The utility giant closed the plant in 2014 just as the U.S. EPA was instituting new standards for how coal ash ponds are managed.

Federal rules in 2015 set new standards for coal ash pond guidelines. OH is one of the largest coal ash generators in the US, and has some of the worst state regulations. The company has been conducting scientific & engineering studies at the site to figure out the best method to safely close these basins. They point to incidents in Pennsylvania, Tennessee and North Carolina where lack of maintenance and attention at aging power plants leading to large spills of coal ash into local rivers and streams from ponds like in Beckjord.” The article is available in its entirety at this link.

In the July 11, 2016 edition of KomoNews an article composed by Mark Miller titled ‘Puyallup police crackdown on abandoned junk cars left in the street’ informed us the following: “A beat-up old Z28 Camaro parked on a residential street could be an eye-popping classic muscle car. But it was tagged by a Puyallup Police parking enforcement officer because it’s considered an abandoned vehicle. Police have launched a crackdown after citizen complaints about beaten up cars and trucks recently.

Deputy Chief Dave McDonald says it is a quality of life issue; people don’t want to have to view abandoned cars on the streets. He says the department is asking the citizens to report suspected junk vehicles. While many people call because they object to the ugliness and because abandoned vehicles can bring down their neighborhood, reporting such cars and trucks helps police solve crimes. A lot of cars that have been stolen are recovered this way. People often call in, so we would run the plate and find it was stolen. Under city law, a car cannot remain parked on a public street for more than seventy-two hours in a row. When a parking vehicle officer tags a vehicle, they write time on the window and place a sticker on the windshield, which is a warning that the vehicle can be towed at the owner’s expense if not moved in 72 hours. If no contact is made or we get no response, then these cars are towed away. The full story is available here.

In another similar effort to clear the streets of unwanted vehicles, on the timesheraldonline.com a story with the headline of ‘Vallejo police start ridding streets of abandoned vehicles’ informed us as follows: “An abandoned vehicle enforcement operation conducted recently impounded 71 cars for various violations, Vallejo PD officials said. The Traffic Division and the Community Services, along with other staff, checked 271 cars that had been reported to police as being possibly abandoned. Of those, 185 were found to be currently registered & legally parked.

The Vallejo PD encourages anyone who has a vehicle that is not registered, missing key components needed to operate or otherwise abandoned on a city street, to have it moved in compliance with local law. You can report abandoned vehicles in multiple ways: by phone — (707) 648-4682, on the internet — www.ci.vallejo.ca.us, click on City Hall, Police, Online Services,” officials said.” The article can be viewed in its entirety here.
