Lauren Trager from STL KMOV composed an article on Feb 14, 2017 with the following information: “A local father lost his son in March as a result of a drunken driving accident. John Allen’s son John, lost control of his car and hit a pole on Highway 141. His son was merely 22 years old and had been battling demons and was hooked on thrills and alcohol. Allen’s son may be gone; however, the wrecked vehicle remains.

The vehicle is mounted on top of a trailer in the back of his property; Allen shields the vehicle as best he can.  He wishes to use the car as a reminder for others of the dangers associated with drunk driving.  He wants to use the car to show students attending prom or DUI offenders. His Homeowner’s Association is not supporting the initiative. Letters from the HOA were received after they fielded complaints about the car, wanting him to remove it.  They indicated that they had authority to remove the car at his expense.

The HOA had a lawyer, thus Allen was unsure how to get an exception to the provision. No one agreed to speak on camera, but after several calls and emails, the HOA’s lawyer changed his mind. Allen then received a letter stating they it wouldn’t be a junk vehicle as long as it’s used for education. The car was allowed to remain and Allen was relieved. They are working with the local chapter of MADD as well as local schools, who may use the car to illustrate the danger associated with drunk driving.”  The full article is available at this link.

A study co-authored by the Center for Resource Recovery and Recycling, Metal Processing Institute, and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute reported some interesting data: “The total recycling rate for auto aluminum is 91%. These surveys covered 5% of the US’ dismantling industry considering the amount of end-of-life (ELVs) vehicles entering the survey responder’s lots, 32% of the downstream separation industry based on volumetric throughput and 60-70% of the secondary aluminum processing sector based on market share statements. The measured average material collection percentage for ELVs that go through a dismantling outfit and a downstream separation system is 99.7%. The major hindrance for the auto aluminum recycling percentage stems from the recovery processes. The product when in the form of aluminum oxide is brought to a landfill from these processes. When a heavier gauge scrap category is charged, referred to for our purposes as a heavy recovery process, the metal yield of 95% is typical. Light gauge scrap melting is believed to generate in a metal yield of 91%, and the method is termed as a light recovery process in the report. Most of auto aluminum is light gauge, mixed, or shredded scrap. It’s been stated that 86% of obsolete auto-aluminum is charged in this form.

Analyzing the sensitivity to determine a minimum & maximum auto aluminum recycling percentage (RR%) for the US. This RR% range is 80% – 98%. The measured average of 91% falls between there and is believed to be much more indicative of the overall industry versus these extremes. This report provides a basis of the variability of the secondary aluminum production sector specifically relative to auto aluminum gathering and recovery.

The demand for aluminum in the North American auto sector is supposed to grow through 2025. Ducker Worldwide reports a 39% spike of aluminum weight per North American light vehicle over the next 10 years. The big driver for the rise is the added content in body sheet & closures with continued content expansion in casting & extruded auto-components. The rise in aluminum is somewhat driven by the advantage of vehicle light-weighting to attain the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ) standards. Aluminum, being a lighter-weight product compared to conventional materials, delivers similar strength. Lighter materials allow for overall lighter delivered vehicles with similar safety performance while boosting fuel economy. The amplified use of aluminum in auto also helps advance car fuel efficiency while reducing overall energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions from a vehicle lifecycle point of view, as indicated in several life cycle studies.” The full story is available here: http://drivealuminum.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Final-Report-Automotive-Aluminum-Recycling-at-End-of-Life-A-Grave-to-Gate-Analysis.pdf

On June 22, 2016 an article was posted on Environmental Leader by Ken Silverstein titled ‘Recycling and Reusing is Good for the Environment and the Company’ with the following details: “When it comes to formalizing your company’s brand and image on reducing and recycling you nearly apply it to every material in the shop. That’s a key point that the ISS’ head of sustainability Dan Gilbert made at Environmental Leader’s recent conference in a session about sustainability. The ultimate goal, he said, is to create “zero waste,” which can mean cutting anywhere from 90% to 100% of what your company is puts in landfills. The final 10%, he emphasized, is where the real work is. To get there, businesses should be measuring and managing their waste streams, and reporting their progress at least on a quarterly basis.

If you save money, your corporate leaders are more than likely to get behind the initiative. While those sustainability efforts require an upfront outlay in time and resources, they build affinity in communities and among customers. Some examples: Computers would be the worst thing to toss in the landfill. This is since they have so many metals and that can leach into the ground water system. Other things that businesses can recycle include supplies, equipment, boxes, shelving and miscellaneous racks.

The companies that take those items might pay those donating for the materials that will eventually go into new products. If a mobile phone is built from recycled components, it prevented waste from going into the landfill and it has created a perfectly good use of still viable components. Companies with their own cafeterias, furthermore, can compost their food scrap rather than toss it in the trash. Food scraps are heavy and they break down and create methane gases. It is possible to be composted and that enriches the soil. Things like plastic pieces, tableware and coffee cups can also be eco-friendly — meaning they are biodegradable.

All businesses can take steps to be more environmentally friendly. One of the fastest ways to do so is to create separate containers for the recyclables and the real trash — but not to mix together. A single-stream deposit in which everything goes into a single bin is better than having various ones for different items. As for the companies that have to invest in these bins, it can be hard enough to get them to buy one, much less 4 of them. A local place to put all recyclables is usually the best solution. Having difficulty finding a vendor to pick them up? Start with the hauler that picks your trash. And if that doesn’t work, get on Google and look for one. He points to a recent Utah State University report that found 20-40% percent of the objects that go into the trash could have been recycled.” The complete article is available here.

In the May 23, 2016 edition of WTOV9, Ryan Eldredge composed a story titled ‘Target 9 Investigation: Should Ohio require vehicle inspections?’ with the following information: “Brooke County Sheriff Jackson says that one of the largest issues with Ohioans is that they will drive junk vehicles. Many drivers in WV and PA and police have wondered how OH drivers get away with operating cars that appear very unsafe. Ohio is one state that does not have mandatory vehicle safety inspections. Sheriff Jackson feels that there are cars that are rattletraps with fenders held with duct tape.

In WV, drivers must have their vehicles inspected. It is a mandatory requirement and managed by the state police. The cost is $10 per year and most people don’t seem to mind. Jackson says that he wants to have his car inspected and that it is simply a “common sense” thing to do. PA also requires inspections, and a recent study found that the safety inspection program saved many lives each year.

Lt. James Faunda of the OH State Highway Patrol says that troopers are constantly looking for unsafe equipment on a vehicle. When they initiate a traffic stop, regardless of the reason, they look at tires, lights, windshield and such to make sure it is safe to be on the roadways. OH does not have a mandatory inspection requirement like other states, but conduct random inspections. Ohio authorities are aware that vehicles that could cause harm to the public, causing a crash. Lt. Faunda feels that the volume of crashes that are attributed to unsafe vehicles is small. Officials with the OH Highway Patrol say that 1/3 of stops are for suspected unsafe vehicles.” The full article is here: http://wtov9.com/news/local/target-9-investigation-should-ohio-require-vehicle-inspections

Our scrap vehicle buyer is happy to pick up your junk car in the regions of Franklin, Grandview Heights, and Minerva Park. Today we examine the ever-expanding use of plastics and scrap or recycled plastic in auto recycling.

“Auto recyclers have been focusing on the recycling of some car components for many years, particularly steel. Conversely, auto plastic recycling is still in its infancy, since recycling of some plastics and polymer composite-based components can provide challenges in terms of cost, technology required and the very makeup of plastics. Further strides are being made to recycle plastics, however, especially post-industrial scrap, and use recycled plastic materials in car components as auto companies have made strong pledges to reduce waste and use of recycled materials in new vehicles. The overall quality of recycled bales & materials have greatly improved recently, increasing the ability of engineering to use recycled plastic toward production of new components. As segment of our focus of pursuing zero waste, SPI works to leverage the strength throughout the supply chain—from resin suppliers & equipment makers to processors, brand owners & recyclers—by recognizing challenges to recycling across the variety of plastic packaging and products. In the transportation end markets, like automobiles, SPI is beginning projects to help find opportunities for both recycling suitable plastic from automobiles that have reached the end of their useful life, as well as using recycled content to producing new cars & components.

Plastics and particularly recycled plastics are playing a state-of-the-art and growing role in auto makers everywhere. The American Chemistry Councils Plastics Division says plastics make up about 50% of a modern automobile’s volume, but only a mere 10% of its weight. Engineering and design teams seeking cost & weight savings are accepting technological advancements in plastic components for their distinctive properties & flexibility. The paramount catalyst for acceptance of plastics in car designs is surpassing the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards & assisting in boosting a vehicle’s fuel economy. The relative volume of plastics in automobiles is increasing, but with the industry focus on cost reduction, and the recent dip in oil & natural gas values, the market dynamics of using virgin resins vs. recycled materials is shifting. Thus, it is important for automakers to acknowledge the value of using recycled content, in both material properties and the environmental benefits. The true value of recycled material far exceeds any potential savings in cost. The auto industry recognizes trends & purchasing habits of consumers who want firms & products to be environmentally sound. Both domestic and foreign auto makers have been leaders in the green movement, in development of lighter, safer vehicles utilizing alternative fuels. Also, in minimizing overall waste & recycling materials like plastic.” The full study is available at www.plasticsmarketwatch.org
