Where to Sell a Car for Scrap in Columbus

Green Tax Incentives Available for Automobiles

Auto dealers across the U.S. are capitalizing on opportunities for securing IRS Energy Credits through the Inflation Reduction Act.  Beginning in 2024, consumers may receive an immediate rebate for “clean” vehicles. Apparently, up to a $7,500 credit is available for new vehicles and up to $4,000 otherwise.

The credit is best thought of as representing a down payment, which is likely more appealing than waiting to claim the credit on your next income tax filing. Surprisingly, the IRS intends to issue these rebate payments to auto dealers within 72 hours of receipt.

Fourteen vehicles that were impounded in the Dayton area were apparently scrapped when an error occurred during a transfer of roughly 600 vehicles between to regional auto companies. These fourteen were for some reason sent to a West Carrolton scrap site and dismantled, despite not having the proper paperwork to do so. Lindsey Bohrer, spokeswoman for the Ohio BMV, says that such junk car processors and salvage companies are still required to obtain the title for vehicles before destroying them. The title information is then forwarded to the state to account for the whereabouts of them. The prosecutor’s office is reviewing the situation with the local authorities. The majority of these vehicles were said to have been there for a lengthy period of time. No apparent criminally-based intent is believed to have occurred. Ordinarily, unclaimed vehicles are stored while attempts are made to contact the owner.

Ken Silverstein of energymanagertoday.com posted the following story on August 5, 2016: “Everyone already heard the news that was that Tesla Motors will buy SolarCity Corp. for $2.6B—that helps Tesla improve its economies of scale when it comes to manufacturing battery storage for both cars & energy. It’s a move that has positive signs for the continued production of battery storage units, although this story will focus on storage used for power generation..

Residential units house smaller systems that produce 5-10 KW of electricity and can be placed in garages. More expensive per kilowatt hours, they are usually used for backup power (rather than generators) or to absorb rooftop solar production. These are used for frequency regulation or renewable smoothing – the most common use today. As for Tesla, it will sell its residential units for about $3,500, but the cost doesn’t include “inverters” that handle voltage levels during operation. They are lithium-ion batteries, which can discharge for about one hour. Many different storage technologies exist and demands are stringent. They are hoping to match the energy produced with the energy their potential use, which may be hard to do.

Other battery companies are also trying to enter the utility business. With 100+ employees, Pittsburgh-based Aquion Energy has started producing batteries that allow utilities to better handle their grids. It says it is selling units to CA and FL utility providers, but can’t release names due to confidentiality agreements. Aquion is offering the battery technology at a Duke Energy’s site, which is now testing their 1st battery technology at a substation in NC — one that is demonstrating quick response, real-time smoothing and load transfer. One of the distribution lines at Duke’s station has a 1.2-megawatt solar unit connected

Battery storage could also allow wind and solar developers to grow in the marketplace, making the grids more efficient, and eliminate the need to increase power production to cover heavy loads. Until the price of batteries is reduced, progress will be slow; other green energy supporters say the problem is simply scale. Once advanced batteries are produced in vast quantities, the overall production costs associated with them will fall.

In the May 23, 2016 edition of WTOV9, Ryan Eldredge composed a story titled ‘Target 9 Investigation: Should Ohio require vehicle inspections?’ with the following information: “Brooke County Sheriff Jackson says that one of the largest issues with Ohioans is that they will drive junk vehicles. Many drivers in WV and PA and police have wondered how OH drivers get away with operating cars that appear very unsafe. Ohio is one state that does not have mandatory vehicle safety inspections. Sheriff Jackson feels that there are cars that are rattletraps with fenders held with duct tape.

In WV, drivers must have their vehicles inspected. It is a mandatory requirement and managed by the state police. The cost is $10 per year and most people don’t seem to mind. Jackson says that he wants to have his car inspected and that it is simply a “common sense” thing to do. PA also requires inspections, and a recent study found that the safety inspection program saved many lives each year.

Lt. James Faunda of the OH State Highway Patrol says that troopers are constantly looking for unsafe equipment on a vehicle. When they initiate a traffic stop, regardless of the reason, they look at tires, lights, windshield and such to make sure it is safe to be on the roadways. OH does not have a mandatory inspection requirement like other states, but conduct random inspections. Ohio authorities are aware that vehicles that could cause harm to the public, causing a crash. Lt. Faunda feels that the volume of crashes that are attributed to unsafe vehicles is small. Officials with the OH Highway Patrol say that 1/3 of stops are for suspected unsafe vehicles.” The full article is here: http://wtov9.com/news/local/target-9-investigation-should-ohio-require-vehicle-inspections

On May 12, 2016 a story titled ‘How GM Generates $1 Billion from Recycling, Reusing Waste Streams’ by Jessica Lyons Hardcastle was posted on Environmental Leader with the following details: “GM is turning trash into cash — nearly $1B in new revenue resulting from recycling & reuse. GM’s latest sustainability report says they have not only saved money, they’ve also generating revenue. In fact, at the end 2015, ninety of their manufacturing operations (53%) and 41% of operations not related to manufacturing were landfill-free. At these sites, about 89% of waste materials are recycled and another 9% are converted to as form of energy. GM estimates reusing, recycling or composting over 2M metric tons of waste material internationally.

John Bradburn is GM’s waste reduction manager, and he participated in an interview with Environmental Leader. Bradburn says the company’s recycling & reuse initiatives were a precursor to their landfill-free program. The company has set high goals recently. According to Bradburn, he pitched a project to sell vehicle components with slight blemishes in the aftermarket market to dealers, rather than throwing them away-which was successful.

Employees water bottles are now recycled into noise-reduction insulation used in vehicles — thus saving money on purchasing new material. GM generates a great deal of metal byproduct, which is separated, sorted and sold, as well as reused within its plants.

Non-ferrous products like aluminum, bronze & magnesium are also separated & sorted at the facilities. With low commodity prices GM is making less on these then before. The company recently published The Business Case for Zero Waste, detailing best practices to help companies generate revenue from its byproducts.” The complete article is available here.
